NetBEUI and TCP/IP
After reading some issues, I am really confused about network protocols. I read it is safer to use TCP/IP as a file sharing protocol.
It had been my understanding and I can very well be wrong, but I thought it was much safer to use NetBEUI for file sharing than TCP/IP as NetBEUI is not routable and therefore accessable only from the physical segment. Also, I thought NetBEUI was faster as the packet headers are smaller and more data could be transmitted in each packet. If anyone can clear this up, I would be very greatful.

You might want to read some of the reports etc. at this site:

This one takes you to the area where he discusses binding protocols:

Cliffh pointed you at some good links. But here's my two cents.
If you are going to have an internet connection (which needs tcp/ip) and are going to also do basic file and/or print sharing on a small home network then I believe it is better to use TCP/IP as the internet protocol and netbeui for the local lan sharing. This means having netbeui bound to MS file and print sharing as well as Client for MS networks, while tcp/ip is not bound to these. If you are a dialup user then I would say go the extra mile and not even have tcp/ip associated with your NIC (unless you need ICS or the like). This will give you the maximum isolation while maintaining all the functions you want. In addition, you are correct about the performance of netbeui. In a small network it is a more efficient protocol than tcp/ip. It is a simple, clean and reliable protocol.

DrMDJ, I have what you describe: TCP/IP only for internet and NetBUI as the only File/print sharing protocol. After reading the grc article, I am confirmed in my belief about NetBEUI. I had read somewhere that is was safer for TCP/IP to bind with file/print sharing. I thought it was wrong, but I needed a second opinion from my my Dr. (i know, rather cheesy)

Hopefully it's clear now. Tcpip is not safer when it is also the protocol used (as is required) for internet access. Using netbeui for sharing allows the needed isolation.
And don't forget a firewall...
