How to stop IE from opening documents but Save As

Is there a way to make Internet Explorer prompt to open a document (doc) or text file or other, non-webpage instead of opening it up in the browser?
I'm using IE 5.01 SP1

Alright Elomon,

Let me answer this the other way round. A .doc will not open up in your web browser. If you click on a file of that nature you'll be promted (most likely) to download the file, afterwhich it'll open up in word. If the page has been programmed to open remotely (rather than downloading) then your word programme will automatically kick in again.

IE or any other browser only supports a certain number of extensions ... .html, .htm, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .php, .cgi, etc. etc.

If, on the other hand you want to transfer the web page contents to your word processor then simply copy and paste the whole page.

Maybe I described it incorrectly. If I click on a link with a file extension not supported by IE (.xls,.doc), the file is displayed within the IE browser without prompting. The toolbars from the program that should open it (Word,Excel) are merged into the browser.

Yes, I know to do that if I want to save it. I wanted to change the behaviour of the browser to always ask instead of just opening it. I guess it's not possible.

Also try double-clicking on My Computer > View > Options > File Types and try to remove some of the file types - fairly drastic since you won't be able to open them in Windows either!
Other than that I afraid its not possible.

I found a way to do it- Microsoft has an 'Office document download confirmation' patch: http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/off...ls/confirm.asp

Once installed, it prompts you to open or save the file.
