Partitioning Hard Drive to install linux.

I have been trying to install linux on a desktop. It is running win98 and I want to add a linux partition.

I have partition magic 3.04 but it doesn't seem to want to work with my hard disk which is 12.8Gb. I can only think that it may be too big.

Has anyone had similiar problems? All suggestions would be appreciated.

There is an alternatice Linux file system called umsdos, that actually allows you to install it within a folder in a fat16 or fat32 partition, and boot from DOS command line! there are a couple of distributions based on it - I use DragonLinux, available from www.dragonlinux.nu,(10MB, slackware based) and there is also ZIP Slackware which is 35MB, available from www.slackware.com
unfortuantly, you can't use popular distributions like Caldera or Red Hat in this configuration, and there are some security and performance issues as well.

Either backup everything and repartition using FDISK or upgrade to Partition Magic 4.0 and use that to re-allocate some space for Linux. Once Linux is installed, you can use Lilo to control which OS to boot or you can run Loadlin after booting to DOS. I've been running Win98, Caldera Linux and WinNT like this with no trouble.
