    Resolved [RESOLVED] NT4 Shares

This may be a well known thing, but I need to know how to create a share on a BDC while working on another BDC. I used to do this with NT3.51 but the share option does not appear when browsing another server in explorer with NT4. Is there a way to enable this option? I have over 20 servers being rolled out in Feb over a WAN and I need to prepare a configuration now that will be manageable. I have thought of using PC Anywhere to remotely configure shares, but shorely NT can let you do it?

Any help will be hugely appreciated!

    Cheers

    Try the NT Resource Kit:

RMTSHARE is a command-line utility that allows you to set up or delete shares remotely.

In order to run RMTSHARE, even to just view shares, you must have share-changing permissions on the remote computer.

    Thank you very much Howard!

I have got the hang of the basics using RMTSHARE now and it will do the job for me. I assume from your response that remote share management through the GUI was dropped between 3.51 and 4.0 and the only way to do it is by using RMTSHARE?

No, there is a remote gui but it involves an installation process and looked a little messy to explain. Anyway, all good administrators should work at the command prompt occasionally, it's good for the soul!

If you run the winfile.exe from the other BDC you will be able to create shares. This is esseentially the old file manager program.

If you map to the admin shares ( eg c$ d$ ) on the other server you will then be able to create and manage shares.

You can even use winfile.exe from a workstation.

    cheers

Thanks for the history lesson Craig! I knew winfile still existed but didn't realise what you could do with it. I just had a look. Love that clunky interface and no right mouse button - what fun we used to have!!!
