windows xp home sp3
hi-am going to try to explain my current setup and outline what I would like to do.
I have a dell 8250 loaded with windows xp home sp3.
sometime ago I had a problem and the tech that fixed it partioned my drive I had(C) into 2 parts.On the smaller one he installed another copy of windows xp and put my original windows xp onto another HD(E).I have the original disk for this one but not for the one he installed.What I would like to do is get rid of his copy and use (boot) from my copy from drive E.Is that possible?does this make sense or is there another solutionI could use.I am a beginner so whatevert i've got to do should be simple if possible.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks

Go to the My Computer>Folder Options>View tab, and select "Show hidden files and folders", and then uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Then go to the root folder of the C: drive and find the boot.ini file there. Open it in Notepad and post the contents here, and we'll tell you what to modify.
Nick.

Change it to this:
[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP (C)" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP (E)" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
You can change the text between the quotation marks to anything you like. If it does not boot, you can choose the current C: partition, just in case the Windows intallation on E: is not functional.

Yes, run Windows Update ASAP. Other than that, everything ought to be the same as you left it. See if it will boot, and then we can help with any other problems you have with it. I'm off to bed now, but the others will be along to assist

Show the hidden files then open boot.ini in notepad.
