Horrible monitor text and squashed picture
It's a V7 19" widescreen, model D19W11A, which I'm told by V7 Support, is plug and play.
The text is really horrible and everything on screen is squashed. I've tried turning on Cleartype but after clicking the 'Turn On' button, I get the message 'Please turn on Cleartype to continue' (I think it needs SP3 before CT will work)?
Anyway, no luck there and no luck with the resolultion.
"Input signal out of range, change to 1440 x 900
What do I do
Thanks - rev

So did you set the resolution to 1440x900 or not? That is the native res of the monitor. Other resolutions won't look right.
(I think it needs SP3 before CT will work)?
Does that mean you're running XP? If so, why haven't you updated to SP3 yet? MS dropped support for SP2 already.

1400 is the highest res available and the machine rejects it. I'm updating to SP3 as we speak, I'll post back as to whether Cleartype works after that.

System specs would help. You can try updating the video drivers.
If you can't get to 1440x900, it won't look right even if you use Cleartype.

Tried that, Support told me there are no drivers, it's supposed to come good with the generic drivers included with XP.

True, but it might improve it. I'm sure we've had this monitor looking good in the past, same machine. The monitor died and a new power supply was needed, that's got nothing to do with the appearance though.

Which support are you talking about? I meant video card drivers, not monitor drivers.

Maximum Resolution 1440x900

Be sure the monitor Refresh rate is set to 60 Hz.

I'm unable to get that setting. Maybe I just need to update the vid card driver - downloading now.

Ok, downloaded and installed a driver package from the HP site but I don't know how to make it the 'active' driver. Whatever was being used before is still being used.
I tried the hardware wizard and pointed to the inf but I got the old 'doesn't contain info about your hardware' message. I've installed something but I don't know where it is!
Installed Cleartype powertoy - no difference, probably because the res isn't set to what's required 1440x900.
As pointed out by Train, the monitor can support the res but when I tried to select those settings under Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor the drop down for refresh rate only contains 'Use default hardware setting' No refresh rates to choose from.
Anyone got any more ideas?

What video card do you have? Nvidia, ATI, Intel, etc? I would go to the video chipset manufacturer's site instead of HP.

HP Drivers are downloaded as "Service Packs".. -ie SP12345.exe an executable.. Have you run this executable?
This monitor has worked OK on this PC before a Power Pack failure... Was it running the 1440x900 previously? if yes What was done to the PC between the Monitor failure and now? ie Was there any software installed, other hardware, another monitor?
Question: The monitor Power supply..internal or external (tech curiosity)?

Midknyte:
I've had trouble finding out what card is in there, PC Wizard has 'no information.' I read that for HP and Compaq stuff, users should go to the HP site not the chipset site
Undertaker:
Yes, I grabbed the two most likely exe's from the HP site. The drivers aren't listed by computer model so I had to take a best guess. One was for integrated and non-HDMI cards, the other was for Nvidia ATI non-HDMI.
The first exe ran just fine, analyzed the system and appeared to find something appropriate to install. But, once finished, it didn't appear to have replaced the previous driver. I still have a ? in Device Manager against 'Video Controller.' I tried a few things (listed above) but I couldn't figure out how to make the system use the new driver instead of the old - if indeed there was one.
The second said 'No Nvidia' card found, so I concluded it probably wasn't Nvidia. I guess I'll have to take the case off and read the sticker
Yes, ir worked on this PC before the repair and yes, another monitor has been used with this system while we had the repair done. No software has been installed that would make crappy text and a squashed screen ratio.
It might not have been the PS that failed, we had to have a small card replaced inside the monitor case. It's the card that has the green ON light for the monitor switch.

Where did you read that? It's not like HP makes their own video chipsets.
Did you run a diag like SysInfo to find out what hardware you have? If you don't provide the proper specs, it's difficult to help you.

If you can't tell us what card you have, what is the model of the HP unit?
