XP - SP3 Partial Install "Access is Denied"

I never did install SP3 (KB936929) for my IE6 with SP2, which is running on XP-Home. I am the sole user and the Admin. Now that Microsoft is doing away with support for IE6 I thought I'd install SP3 and then upgrade to IE7. Well, I can't even install SP3.

I see that many people have had problems installing SP3. I have done everything I can think of - all the fixes and tips, but I continue to get "Access is Denied" after the Wizard installs about 50% of the SP3 files...then it has to delete the new files and re-install the old ones and restart..and I'm back to square one again. I must have tried to intstall SP3 two dozen times.

I turned off my Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes
I stopped or disabled services that aren't needed
I rebooted for a fresh start
I first used Windows Update for the KB936929 SP3 install (Access Denied)
I downloaded KB936929 as a stand-alone and tried installing (Access Denied)
I used Dail-a-fix to repair permissions and tried again (Access Denied)
I used KB949377 to install the Subinacl.exe file - ran the batch to reset the registry and file permissions (Access Denied)
I checked to see if I had MS XML 6.0, or MS Shared Computer Toolkit, or Remote Desktop Connection installed (Did Not)

On Windows Update History the KB936929 SP3 file shows it failed to install (numerous times!) - Error Code: 0x80070005
When I ran the Command check to find what failed it said INF Registry Failed - Install Error 0x5

I've run out of possible fixes and tips. In searching this problem I see that some people finally were able to install SP3 while others couldn't and just give up. I guess it all depends on each individual computer and its configuration, registry changes, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't already tried to install KB936929 SP3 for XP?

Have a read of this KB article and see if it helps (ignore the fact that it says it is for SP2, it will apply to any service pack):

Yes, I have...and did all those methods.

Since I'm using XP-Home I do not have "secedit", but I did make a cmd and run the others in hopes it would reset the update permissions. I also checked to make sure my permissions were okay, which they were. Of course, if I didn't have permissions I doubt I could have even started the SP3 install at all.

This Svcpack.log file information may help:

I also ran these DLLs in Start/Run:

    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

    --------------

I also downloaded and installed subinacl.exe and created a file named "reset.cmd" with the following registry lines in Notepad, and ran it:

    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

    -------------

I also downloaded Dial-a-fix and ran the WU Windows Update fix.

Hi, Koot, it's me, aka Techiewoman.

I sent Koot here when he couldn't solve the problem elsewhere.

Shinma, the last thing I suggested to koot was a repair install. Would that screw up the registry or system files in any undesirable way? I've done them, but not with this type of problem. I will learn as much as him/ her from this problem.

(Shinma--Would it be too OT to ask what your avatar is?)

Hey Techie gal! I would be interested in knowing the answer too. Hopefully Shinma will respond with an answer to your question.

Well, I tried installing SP3 in Safe Mode and it also failed at the same point.

It's strange that in Safe Mode the install wasn't able to backup seven (7) of my registery keys. Here's some examples of what it would not backup:

Service Pack 3 Setup could not backup Registry Key:

    HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00750. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\CEnroll.CEnroll
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00751. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5.1
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00865. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\SoftwareDistribution.WebControl
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg01348. 5:
    Access is denied

    HKCR\SoftwareDistribution.WebControl
    to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg01349. 5:
    Access is denied

    And - WUClientUIPPlugin \reg1349 & 1352 & 1353

I guess since no backup was necessary all the above registry keys are still in my registry. Dunno!

Anyway, Safe Mode failed to install SP3...

I also ran Windows Installer Update KB942288-v3-x86.exe to make sure my update installer was up-to-date. Still had the same thing happen - 50% of the file installed and then received "Access is denied".

I also ran the M$ Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool to make sure everything was okay with my XP-Home and it was registered as genuine, which it was.

I'm wondering if my original XP-Home CD may be able to help in any way to repair whatever is wrong. I assume the problem is likely with a registry, but I'm not sure about that... I don't want to use the XP-Home CD to repair anything if that may cause me to lose anything on my computer.

I feel that something is haywire with a registry somewhere - maybe permissions, but I checked my Admin permission and it looks good.

    Any more ideas?

    See these instructions:
    From this link:

    http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/re...in-windows-xp/

You may need to reset the registry and file permissions if you experience Access is denied error when installing a Windows XP Service Pack or update. (Example: Service Pack 3 setup error. Access is denied.)

Hint: If you’re seeing the error Service Pack 3 setup error. Access is denied when installing Windows XP Service Pack 3, to verify if the error is caused by incorrect registry permissions, open the file C:\Windows\Svcpack.log using Notepad and look for the text Access is denied or DoRegistryUpdates failed.

Note: Access denied errors can also be caused by third-party applications, especially anti-virus or anti-spyware applications. So, make sure that you close all the anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities temporarily and then install the Service Pack. This helps in most cases. You should reset the registry and the file permissions only if necessary.
Resetting the Registry and the File Permissions

Using SECEDIT.EXE (for Windows XP Professional)

In Windows XP Professional, you may use the following secedit command-line to reset the file and registry permissions to defaults.
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

For more information, see article How to reset security settings back to the defaults.

    Using SubInACL

For Windows XP Home Edition (and Professional Edition), you may use the SubInACL tool to reset the registry and file permissions. Download and then install the Subinacl.exe (~370 KB) from Microsoft. SubInACL is a command-line tool that enables administrators to obtain security information about files, registry keys, etc.

Download reset.zip, unzip and run the reset.cmd file. This script resets the registry and file permissions in your system.
    Reset.cmd Contents

The file reset.cmd contains the following lines:
    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive%\ /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

You need to download and run the Reset Tool .. file is attached

    Techiewoman, please; I'm 63.

Avatar query be easier to answer than the SP3 problem. After about 2 weeks of this, a format might be even easier. All your data backed up? Have all your install CDs and setup files? I could do mine with my 86 programs in 4 days flat before I started cloning my HD.

Service Pack install issues are often caused by malware or malware leftovers. Some malware will take ownership of files and registry keys under a different, hidden, admin user account.

jdc2000 has a good point. But I suggest the OP runs the Reset tool I attached and then see if SP3 will install. If it still won't then I would lean towards possible malware being on the system. Of course a scan with proper program and an analysis by experts on this forum would not be a bad idea.
