Norton Internet Security 2010 caused major problems

Using XP.
AVG was expiring and I purchased Norton Internet Security 2010. Removed AVG and loaded Norton in on Sunday and Monday immediately noted that my computer was slower. There were unusual delays when I either tried to open a folder in My Documents, clicked on an icon, tried to delete a file, or tried to save a file. I was repeatedly getting Not Responding error messages. After frustration for several hours, I removed Norton and downloaded AVG, which I am now using.

The long delays are gone, though there is still some isolated sluggishness. I would estimate that I am probably 90% back to where I was before I loaded in Norton.

All due respect to those who have Norton and love it, but for me it was a disaster. It may be a long time before I try another Symantec product.

You may still have some leftovers from AVG that are fighting with Norton. Did you use the AVG Remover tool to remove all traces of AVG after uninstalling? If not, you may want to give that a try and post back the results. I just had to do the same to a friends computer, and it made a difference.

I would like to add that you'll also need the Norton removal tool to remove all files that were associated with Norton as well.

I used Add/Remove to remove both the expiring AVG and Norton.

I agree that there may be remnants of either or both, though I am not sure what to do about the remnants. I could do do a Search for files and folders and delete the remnants which are found, but you guys like to yell at folks when they do that.

I am using AVG on a monthly trial. I note that Kaspersky has gotten some good reviews, lately. Any serious warnings/objections to my trying Kaspersky?

If you decide to try Kaspersky or Norton again, you will need the AVG removal tool AND (for Kaspersky) the Norton removal tool. Otherwise, you will have leftovers that will fight for control of your system. A standard uninstall will not get rid of all of the AVG elements. The Norton 2010 uninstall might be able to completely remove Norton, if AVG wasn't interfering. I would recommend using both removal tools. A Google search with get you download links for both.

One of the top rated a/v programs. If you buy the suite with the firewall be sure that Windows firewall (and any other) is not running.

(along with the advice above of using the removal tools to get rid of Norton and AVG.)

Thanks guys.

Will look for removal tools for AVG and Norton. Will try kaspersky (and make sure I do not have the firewall problem fink mentioned).

No, no, no.

Using the norton removal tool is not that easy. Went to norton and the instructions indicate that I need to remove all existing symantec programs, including pcAnywhere and Winfax, which are both working well, before using the removal tool.

PcAnywhere was difficult to set up several years ago and now it is working well. Cannot imagine having to reload in pcAnywhere. Similarly, with winfax I have loads of contacts and do not want the hassle of re-creating my present state. (Hopefully, fink will not now tell me that I will have to live with the existing sluggishness.)

I don't know what was going on but Norton IS 2010 is one of the lightest AV suite that is currently out. Whatever you try, it will likely use more resources. I run NIS on my Win 7 netbook and have installed it on several PCs.

As for Kaspersky, if you are looking for a set and forget kind of program, then IMO, that's not it. Beyond that, I tried the latest version that was out last year and dumped it very shortly afterward. The firewall with default settings was not stealth which was totally unacceptable. Someone at the Kaspersky forums said it should be that way which was IMO, insane.

As for AVG, IMO, you'd be better off with Avira or Avast. I do not recommend AVG at all...

If you have WinFax and PC Anywhere, then I'd skip the Norton removal tool. An uninstall should remove it, provided you get rid of the AVG remnants first.

Thanks, again, guys. I appreciate the comments and help.

Bottom line: I will use removal tools to get rid of remnants of Bit Defender and remove AVG. I will leave Norton alone, since I have pcAnywhere and Winfax working well. Notwithstanding Han's earlier problems, I will load in Kaspersky and give it a trial. Hopefully, I can tell Han a month from now that Kaspersky is God's gift to mankind.

FYI:

Shut down the computer overnight. When I booted up this a.m., even the sluggishness is gone. (Even though I had done a reboot after reloading in AVG, which is required, the effect of the shutdown for some inexplicable reason is different from the reboot.) Anyway, it is back to its pre-Norton condition.

Once again, thanks.

A shutdown of one minute or more, surprisingly, does tend to do that at times. Used it myself numerous times over the years.
