    card reader won't read

Hi to all: Trying to get a card reader to reader when source disk is inserted. When the media is inserted, the on light acknowledging presence of the media comes on, green. However, in My Computer the drive does not show; when interrogated each icon asks for a disk to be inserted. Too, when rebooting the system with the media inserted, the computer will hang, not complete the boot. The XP Home system was recently restored, cleaned down to the bone, and drivers inserted. Could it be that maybe a driver for the card reader was not installed. Have to note that nothing in Device Manager indicates the absence of a driver for the card reader. Much thanks for the help, Jim S

Afraid not. The reader, and 4/1 looks like it came with the system, built-in. In doing a quick check, it appears that the Dell download site, very capable, easy to use, does not post a driver for the card reader. Checked around, and looks like some others have had the same problem, and it was recommended that they purchase a driver disk. Kinda odd that the driver for the reader is not on the site, but that does happen now and again. Thought maybe I could get it from some other source, place, j

How old is the PC? If the age of the PC is too advanced, it may not be able to read the card. As an example, the PC I am typing this on can only read up to 2 GB cards. Anything bigger does not show up. Ad I can't update the driver because the PC is too old and HP no longer updates any files for it.

What type of card is it? Because of the above problem, I have been using external USB card readers. Which worked great until recently. When the HC series of SD cards came out, my old USB card readers would no longer work. So I had to upgrade to cards rated to read HC series cards.

HI to all: It's a Dell Dimension E310. I just finished putting the max mem (2Gb) in and all works well. Checked the Dell site again and did a search under: Driver for card reader in Dell E310, and got some information back, but not sure it's the correct item, since it mentions (the download) Flash Utility, and I certainly don't think I want to flash the BIOS. The item is listed as: R176603EXE. Says it's good for xp and vista, and is classed as windows based firmware flash utility to update the teac card reader with additional memory card formats (13-19) Since the reinstall and all drivers, and peripheral units are up and running fine (took a ton of time), I don't want to mess up, thouh I could clone to and external hard drive just in case, but.....Again, thanks to all. The flash utility they're talking about is firmware to update the reader so it can read larger cards. It's not used to flash the BIOS.
