    Second SATA drive frustration!

    Help!

I bought a new 1 (OEM) TB SATA hard drive to be a secondary drive. The trouble is that when I installed it and turned on my computer the drive is not seen in "My Computer" but IT IS seen in the Device Manager. Yikes. Also when I went into the BIOS both hard drives are seen.

My goal is to format, and partion the second drive so it will work. How can I do this?

Thanks in advance for everyone's kind, kind help!

Click on Start- Run and type-> diskmgmt.msc

You need to create partition(s) and format it.

You have to partition and format the drive before it will show in My Computer. You can do that in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management. Right-click on the unpartitioned space of the new drive and you'll see an option to partition it. Once partitioned right-click again and you'll get a "Create logical drive" option, which will bring up a dialog with the formatting options. I'd recommend that you choose an Extended partition type, that way all your drive letters will be kept in order.

    No Joy

Thanks for the good advice. However when I get to the Disc Mangagement area the only device that is seen is the CD ROM (No HD). When I visit the Device Manager I see both Hard Drives but not in the Disc Managment area. Any other thoughts?

    Thanks Again!

    What OS are you using?
Can you do a screen shot of diskmgmt and post it here?

Your system drive is not showing up either. Are you running any Symantec/Norton products? Please list any other disk related applications you've installed.

    Open diskmgmt
Go to view in the menu
    In the drop down.

    for TOP, check Volume list
    For Bottom, check Grahical View

    Another Screenshot

Train - My settings are as you said to put them. Exactly...

Midknyte - I'm not running any type of Norton/Symantec products or type of products...

I did another screenshot showing my programs in case this may be a clue.

    I use AVG, Spybot, Etc,

Any more ideas? Its cool that everyone is pitching in to help. Thanks for the input!

I think there may be something wrong with your Disk Management. Here is a copy of the app from one of my WinXP virtual machines, try replacing your one with it and see if that helps. It lives in the Windows\System32 folder.

What service pack do you have? Did you upgrade to SP3 recently? If so, you may need to reload/update your chipset drivers.

If that doesn't work, you can try this fix. Backup your registry first!
Start Windows - press Start - run - type regedit and press ok/enter.
    Then find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
There you will need to select Edit - New - Multi-String Value.
Rename it to UpperFilters. Then right click on this value and select Modify. Type PartMgr.
    Quit and then restart Windows.
