Outlook Express 6 new mail sound alert not working
Hi,
I'm a new memeber here and need help with my Outlook Express 6. All of a sudden, the new mail sound alert has disappeared. I have checked the settings and they have not changed from the time when it was working. It just disappeared overnight and no new software have been installed from the time that it was working.
I am using Windows XP Home edition, IE7 with SP2 and Outlook Express with SP2 also.
I am not a programmer and my knowledge of tweeking is limited. So will need step by step non technical instructions for any remedies or tweeks suggested. My OE is always on even though I may not have it as the page I am working on. Thus my purpose of the sound alert to let me know if I have a new mail when I am working elsewhere, such as surfing on the net.
Any suggestions and help received will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advanced.

Greetz.
Try this. I hope i've made it easy enough to understand.
Open up outlook, Now on the menu bar click the "Tools" then in that menu select "Options"
Then a new window should open, now make sure the "Preference" tab is selected, now select "Email Options"
on the next window select "Advanced E-Mail Options" now now make sure that the needed settings have a tick in there box, then select the "Desktop Alert Settings".
Once you have checked the settings just simply click the "OK" button, then once the Options box has closed, exit out of outlook via the "File" menu.
then re-open outlook and see if you get those sounds back.

Thanks t34b4g5
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. After opening Outlook Express and clicking on the Options, I can't find the Preference tab anywhere. There is the General Tab and within it, there is no Preference option either. After the General Tab, there are tabs for Read, Receipt, Send, Compose, Signatures, Maintenance, Connection, Security, and Spelling and within each of these tabs, there is not Preference options either.
Does OE6 have this Preference tab ? I don't remember ever seeing it in the past.
Thanks for the suggestion. I wished the required tab is there
Any fiurther suggestions ?

Greetz.
Ok try this then..
- Open Outlook Express.
- Go to the Tools menu
- Click on Options.
- Make sure the General tab is selected.
- Check the "Play sound for new messages" box to hear when you have a new message.
- Check the "Send and receive messages at startup" box to automatically check for new messages each time you start your e-mail program.
- Check the "Check for new messages" box and then select the time intervals at which you want the e-mail program to automatically check for mail.
- Click OK.
Let me know if this time it works.

Thanks for the suggestions.
All the setting you suggested are already ticked a long while ago and still no luck. Please don't forget that the sound alert was working fine until it suddently disappeared.
I've also check the Sound and Audio setting in Control Panel and the options are selected as they should to make the alert work - in theory !! But......
There must be other unknow ways to make it work. I've even tried reinstalling OE6, but it won't let me as it says a newer version is already installed. I deleted IE7 from Add/Delete Program option in Control Panel which only brought me back to IE6 and I can't delete that further from there !
