Connecting 98SE to cable modem.
I've got cable for my internet connection (BIG mistake), and I would like to know how to configure my hardwire connection from my computer to the modem/internet with 98SE as the OS.
(It is ez with XP but 98SE wants to know what kinda newfangled thing a cable modem is. )

Do you have a nic installed in your 98 computer?
If yes, the attach a cat5 cable between the nic and the modem.
CNo if the connection cd does not work, hit the isp's help files online and they will probably tell you how to configure the networking part.
May even need to call them.
But remember to take notes as you well may need the information again.

First thing I say is never run a computer connected straight to your cable modem, purchase a router with a built in firewall....you will thank me later.
Then make sure your nic is set to obtain an ip address automatically...which it would need regardless to pick up the ip from the modem or the router.....unless for some odd reason you IP is still dishing out static ips....probably not the case tho

'nudder question
Thanks guys.
I'm using a CAT 6 Patch Cord to connect from my computer to the Motorola SBV 5220 Modem. Right now I have a Ghost copy of XP running for this surfing, but I really would like to go back to my smaller 98SE OS.
I've found NO applet in 98SE for anything more than a dial-up connection.
How about an ex post facto program?
Sarrkazztic; why the caution about no direct cable connection, viruses? I've used ZoneAlarm, successfully, for about a decade, and even Steve Gibson's site says it cannot find me even with having my IP!

Reason: Additional question for Sarrkazztic.

Let me put it this way, once you do use a router and find and use their advantages, I do not think you will go back to a direct hook up.
As for Steve Gibson, he sold ZA a long time ago. Therefore I take that site with a huge grain of salt now.

Train; Sorry to disagree but I found my router to be slower than my hardwire. I did not know Steve Gibson owned ZoneAlarm and I'm not really concerned about it's current owner as long as it works "as advertized".
Any idea about how to connect 98SE to my modem via my CAT6 patch cord? The cord connection works fine with XP.
