transfer of files and settings not working

    Hi everybody,

I'm trying to use Window's wizard to transfer files and settings from a computer to another. However, in the step where I am asked to choose where I want to store the information, a prompt warnes me that I cannot use the LAN and urges me to verify that the LAN works alright and the other computer is on. Everything seems to be alright.

Moreover, after trying the option of choosing myself the place where I want to store the information and in the next step being prompted to choose from a list what I want to transfer (files and settings), no matter what I do (ticking the box provided) it remains disabled, and I cannot continue.

My LAN is wireless. Source desktop computer Windows XP Home Edition, target laptop computer WXP Proffesional.

What's wrong here? What's preventing this from working fine? Any clues appreciated. Thanks

When you set up the network, did you enable file sharing on both computers?

Yes, I have a file sharing folder on the laptop (enough for the moment) and another one on this source desktop computer. File sharing is enabled and I can drag files to them. I'm afraid the problem is when trying to communicate with the other computer, and in the next dialogue box of the wizard the list is disabled (I cannot choose what file/setting I want to transfer).

Is it the Home or Small Network option that is not available?

I checked out the subnet mask and both have 255.255.255.0; else, where can I change the subnet? Thanks

Can you provide the ipconfig information for both computers and post it here so we can further diagnose the issue?

Did you try the other method from the KB Article? If not, I would try it and see if that works instead.

Yes, that's the alternative I tried first when using the wizard, but on the next dialogue box there's a list (it can be files and settings, files or settings) where I'm prompted to choose an option. I tick a box to choose but the choices remain disabled. So this is a like a jail and I don't know what to do more...

    Any other hints?

Yes, I can drag or copy&paste files and folders, but I want to make big and more complexe transfers, so this is why I need this.
