[RESOLVED] 360 & PC same monitor? ;o

I was thinking of ways to save money and save time. I'm getting a 360 soonish, and I've heard that most LCD monitors support 720p (I hope mine does... BenQ FP91V+). SO I figured I would try to hook the 360 into the monitor, BUT... I'd like to keep it hooked up to my PC as well.

So I was thinking of getting something similar to a KVM switch (or whatever they are...) but for a monitor...

Anybody know if anything like this exists?

You can use the 360 via DVI, and the PC via VGA, but it won't support 720p as it isn't HD, you'll get 480.

Darn, I had heard somewhere that LCD monitors were naturally HD... Oh well

Nope, unfortunately, there are a couple that have HDMI outputs, but some have DVI's that are HD (HDCP Compliant) and you could use it with one of those with the right cable....but not with that monitor unfortunately.

How do I know for sure if my monitor can handle HD media? It has a DVI and a VGA port on the monitor, and cables and stuff...

The DVI must be HDCP compliant to run HD content, and at the size it wouldn't be true HD, but it would be 720p @ that res. Looking at the specs in the link it is not HD, and it's unusual to find a 19" monitor that is HD, although there are a couple of 19" widescreens that are. (I've got one )

How would I know if a monitor is HD then? If it has an HDCP plug? Any sure fire ways of know if a monitor can handle 'true' HD?

Well, if it has a DVI port, the DVI port has to be HDCP compliant, as HDCP is the copy protection, if it has a HDMI port it also supports HD, but for true HD it needs to support a resolution of at least 1920 x 1200 and be HD, as true hd is 1080i, if the resolution is anything less than that then you will get 1080p/720p.

It's not HD, you need to look for "HD Ready", or if you go into specs look for DVI (HDCP Compliant).

That is HD, and via both HDMI and DVI, so the good news is that you can use the HDMI for the 360 (As HDMI is DVI with built in sound), and the DVI on the PC if your graphics card supports it. You won't get "True HD" but you'll be able to run 1080p/720p, you'd be looking at big bucks for a true HD res.
