Hi and Welcome to Virtual Dr.

Unfortunately you don't meet the system requirements based on video card spec:

    Recommended:

3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card
    Minimum System Requirements:

    Windows XP
    512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    128MB Direct3D compatible video card
    and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
    8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
    DirectX 9.0c (included)
    DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
    Keyboard, Mouse
    Supported Video Card Chipsets:

    ATI X1900 series
    ATI X1800 series
    ATI X1600 series
    ATI X1300 series
    ATI X850 series
    ATI x800 series
    ATI x700 series
    ATI x600 series
    ATI Radeon 9800 series
    ATI Radeon 9700 series
    ATI Radeon 9600 series
    ATI Radeon 9500 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6600 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6200 series
    NVIDIA GeForce FX series
That could be the problem, as the card can't handle the settings correctly.

I doubt it, unfortunately, you'll need to splash out on a new card, it should improve things as that card looks to be a bottleneck in that system, considering your other components.

This is about the 4th or 5th person on VDr who can't run this game.

Either people don't read and check the specs, or the games shops selling it are telling people that they don't really need such a high spec.

Just seems strange that this game seems to stand out as one that's catching poeple out ?

This is not the only forum where people buy the game only to find out their specs aren't enough to play the game. Evidently the box that the game comes in, doesn't specify anything other than minimum requirements, or that's all people read.

Hi Deven and Welcome to Virtual Dr.

I'm afraid your graphics card doesn't meet the requirements, what settings are you running in-game?

Do you have any background processes running when you run the game? When was the last time you did a clean install of Windows? I'm not recommending it as a fix, but it sure feels nice playing games on a clean OS. Also you may wanna check out the temps when you're playing, or shortly after, if you can check the basics in the BIOS, and then use Everest Home, or something similar to pick up GPU temps, then i'd suspect the 9250 is giving you problems.

    Hey Deven,

You have to note that the minimum requirement is only an estimate. My hardware well exceed the requirement for recommended specs, and I still have to adjust the settings. This is because Oblivion is an extremely beautiful game; and as a result, it requires a demanding graphix card. The developers probably didn't adequately test the lowest settings before they released it. Some reasons why it crashes or lags when you play may include: the game's utilization of instructions from the graphix card that has been changed over time, unexpected utilization of technologies from a graphix card, the graphix card's engine is not adequate enough to carryout the instructions of the game, and more yukky issues.

Your best bet is to buy a new graphics card. One with x1000 based if you're using ATI or [7-8]000 based if you're using Nvidia. These cards will certainly give a boost to your performance.

I have a 7900GS and I still have to really adjust it to get it running nice and smooth. I still get crashes for unapparent reasons getting errors about memory access errors.

P.S.: I wouldn't worry about background threads since you have a combination of tremendous ram capacity and using a P4. Although if you are run a SUPER CPU-intensive program it certainly effect the game. Oh yes, and I don't see 9200 series cards, the lowest it goes is 9700.

Unfortunately, though the 9500 is listed on the minimum requirements to play this game, it's not listed on the maximum and maximum requirements is what will play the game. Go to the website in the link below and check to see if your system will run Oblivion. I bet you find after checking under the Maximum tab your computer/graphics card won't run this game:
