Right Click On Desktop And System Hangs?

I’m running XP Pro (NTFS) SP-2, Intel P-4 1.7 MHz, 512 RAM, Creative SB Live, Nvidia Ti 4200, Logitech Logitech Cordless Duo and Norton Premier 2005.

The last couple of days when I right click on the desktop to change wallpaper etc., it hangs for about a minute or more (with no other programs open). Occasionally, I have to turn off the PC and reboot. Before I uninstall the Logitech software and reinstall the latest drivers, is there some common that causes this? I’ve tried my older Logitech USB mouse and have the same problem when I right click on the desktop.

Also, when I put the cordless mouse back in the cradle, many times I have to push both connect buttons to get the red light blinking for recharge. My only solution is reinstalling the Logitech software.

    Thanks for any input.
    Mike

This issue may call for a HijackThis log. Is the processor usage at 100% when it happens? You should be able to check that from task manager. Could also be something corrupt in active desktop.

The usage is "very" low when this happens. I've always wondered what active desktop meant?

    Thanks,

Mike, The info at the link below may be of some help. Go thru it especially, "Problems when you right-click an empty area in the Desktop?"

The CPU usage is at 2 - 5%, nothing going on. I did change folders to classic view. I right clicked on the desktop and it's still doing it...hung the whole system a few minutes ago and had to cold reboot. This problem just started this week. When I put my cordless Logitech mouse back in the cradle, I almost alway have to press the connect buttons to get the red light flashing and recharging the batteries. However, the same problem happened with another mouse. Something is bogging this system down.

    thanks,
    Mike

I just checked control panel again and I'm missing "Performance and Maintenance". I also have an older version of tweak UI and if I recall, I did a rebuild icons about a week ago and that's when I think this problem started. I just did it again and remembered how it pushed all my icons to the left.

    Tufenuf,

That did it...THANKS!! MS now has their little update sign below as they "still" want to make the same update. I uninstalled the update, and now it shows up in Windows Update...go figure!

    Thanks again,
    Mike

    And read here
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
It would seem MS needs to add more to the Symptoms section.

That MSKB article refers to problems that could be caused by the 908531 Critical Update
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-015.mspx

918165, itself, is not the number of the update

Like that post said, there has to be a lot of unhappy people out there. You would think MS would have patched this by now. I wondered if the updates I installed earlier this week did something.

Mike, Glad to see that you have corrected the problem. I frequent other forums and that Microsoft Update is causing quite a bit of havoc for many others.

Would you ever buy an Apple computer? I'm due for a new one soon.
