sndvol32.exe is missing, cannot get volume bar!

Hi all, i have a factory installed xp running on my laptop, so i cannot use the xp disk like the usual person could to sort this problem. The sound icons has never even been there, i have a mic, and there is alot of feedback, so when i tried to find it, it came up with the error message sndvol32.exe is missing or corrupt, to install it goto add/remove programs.

I have no idea how i am going to update the driver etc? i have crystal WDM audio which is old, please help, im completely stuck!

Hi Richard, you may have other copies on your drive that we can copy or expand. Let's see.

go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt >

dir /s /a "c:\sndvol32*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

I have the same problem, and i did what you recomended for Richard, and I got this in notepad:

AustinM, In Windows Explorer open the c:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder and copy the sndvol32.exe and paste it into your C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder.

austin goto start then run type cmd then type copy c:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\sndvol32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32 and it should copy it all for you

AustinM, Welcome to the forum. Follow these istructions:

Click Start> put your cursor over Programs, then Accessories and in the Menu you'll see Windows Explorer. Double click on Windows Explorer and at the top click Tools, click Folder Options. Under the View tab tick(.) "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files", click Apply/OK.

Now go back into Windows Explorer and in the left pane click the "+" in front of My Computer, Local Disk (C:, WINDOWS, system32, then double click on the dllcache folder. Go to the right pane and located sndvol32.exe then right click it and choose Copy. Now go over to the left pane and double click on the system32 folder, go to the right pane and right click on an empty spot and choose Paste. This will put a copy of the sndvol32.exe into the system32 folder where it should be located. You can then close Windows Explorer.

Now go into your Control Panel (Start>Control Pane) and click on Sounds and Audio Devices and under the Volume tab checkmark "Place volume icon on Taskbar", click Apply/OK.

Hello, I liked Ann Marie's answer it was leading somewhere, still simple is best if it works. JacobP you might like to start your own thread as it appears you are running win 98. Could fix it if this problem just started try a scanreg /restore , go back to before the problem.
