If you insert the XP Pro disc after you've booted, it should autorun, and there will be an option to Install|Then choose Upgrade, and it's as simple as that, because the OS is the same at its core, so a format is not needed.

does it boot up to the disk?
It shouldn't matter what the version of the current windows is, if it boots to the CD then you should be able to reformat, ect.

no, when i boot to the cd, it goes through everything, but then the dreaded blue screen pops up and says stop. pci.sys or something like that. it never makes it as far as the harddrive size or format or anything else. thanks for the quick reply.

get the actual stop code..
it should be something like 0x00000000FA
and then get the file it specifies, if it does specify one

Actually, I've seen this..... What Service Pack is installed on the laptop? Which Service Pack is included on the CD with the upgrade? It may be that you are running SP2 and have an upgrade CD that is pre-SP2.

whoa, please refrain from double (or triple) posting like that. (EDIT is there for a reason)
I doubt that SP2 will have anything to do with getting a bluescreen when trying to run the installer by booting to the CD
You could try creating a bootdisk, there are plenty that can whipe the disk clean, I have to go now though, I'll find them later
I don't know if formatting that way will actually help or not though.., worth a try I suppose

well, here is the latest. i have found that this has sp2 installed on it already. well, that explains the problem. now i have encountered another problem. i can't uninstall sp2 because it was install with win xp home edition 2002 which has it built in it. so, i guess now that i am just stuck with the home edition, with nothing i can do for it. any ideas?

You can copy that disk and slipsteam sp2 on it and that would let you load it.

There is a way to "Slipstream" the XP Pro install with SP2, so that when you load the disc, it does not think that the current install is newer.

you can download the sp2 for multiple computers then use a progran such as auto streamer to slipstream the sp2 on a copied xp pro cd.
