[RESOLVED] printer/file sharing trouble
Hello. I have been trying for two days to get my wireless network up and running. I have a Compaq PC running XP, and a Sony Vaio notebook also running XP. I am using a Linksys wireless router. Internet connection is high speed cable. I have been able to get the laptop to aceess the internet just fine, but I cannot get the two to share files or the printer (old HP DeskJet 722C). It seems to be an acceess problem, because I am getting error messages that say "contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions" when trying to access the PC from the laptop. When trying to add a network printer to the laptop, I get the error message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost it's connection to the server.". I have enabled sharing on the printer through the PC. Not sure where to go from here. I am not all that great with computers, but I am not afraid to jump into this to get it working! Thanks for any and all help in advance!

Welcome to Virtual Dr!
If any of the computers have the Windows Firewall enabled, go to the Exception tab, and make sure the File and Printer Sharing checkbox. If you've installed a third party firewall program such as Norton Internet Security or ZoneAlarm, make sure that it's configured to allow access on the local area network.
If that doesn't help, please start with ipconfig information for each computer.
1. Click Start - Run - "cmd" (without quotes) in the Open box and press ENTER.
2. Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command window
3. Open c:\ipconfig.txt in notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

The following link seems to contain the exact text of your second error message. Don't know if this will help. It's a long page...Use the search page function within your browser to find it. With IE select the edit menu and search for "connection"

The next two links contain text similar to your second error message.

Open your mind, not your computer.

Eric, you are THE MAN!
The problem was in the laptop Norton Internet Security program settings.
To think of the time I have spent beating my head on the (fire)wall...
Many thanks for pointing out what may seem so obvious to most users with 1/2 a brain (which I can only hope to one day obtain ).
