benchmarks

I read alot about benchmark scores in the computer mags, and there all over the globe with the type thay use from Doom 3 to call of duty,unreal turny to world bench 5 .... What gives? Is there one that us (non computer magazine) peeps can use and share scores from ? Is there a benchmark test in the games I play now? Battlefield 2 or Half life 2?......... p.s. If you play one "game" ever..... play Half life 2. Its a movie you control. Flippin Sweet!

Mainly 3D Mark is used.(Different versions available) and it pushes your graphics card for a set time and generates a score based on its own scoring system, the benchmarks in certain games are devised from specs of the system its played on, with resolution it is running at, along with the average FPS without lag/distortion etc, download 3D Mark 03 here: http://www.futuremark.com/download/?3dmark03.shtml post back with your score.

My guess would be that an X800 Pro will give a nice score, but 512mb of RAM will let it down a little.

Yeah, for graphics it's generally 3dMark ... Memtest86 for stressing & testing memory ... And there are many other types of tests to stress systems in general.

I also use Prime95 for stress testing and such. I use the tests primarily to stress test newly built systems just to make sure all is in tip-top shape. And if you're into overclocking they are good to make sure you have stability and measure performance increases and such.

Wow great info, thanks for the vine. Im DLing now. Yea the 512 thats just a matter of me getting to the store. btw...is this a good fourm to talk about overclocking.

Folks around here are pretty good on the OC'ing front ... but I always hesitate unless it's someone who's really done their homework and knows what they're doing. And at best, it's often difficult to tell that on a forum.....
I learned a great deal here ... but more over there http://forums.anandtech.com/categori...=28&entercat=y ... do some searches for your hardware and read a great deal! ;-)

In general terms OC'ing is really just about your multiplier and FSB setting, with some memory timings thrown in... and top notch hardware throughout your system... but the is a bit more to it.
