    NT Authority Shutdown

    Here is some background. Had some nasty trojans and Viruses removed recently. This resulted in greyed out Firewall protocols in SP2 so I decided to remove and reinstall SP2. I forgot to install firewall protection and lets just say my problems are a lot worse than before. I have been infected with the Trojan Collected 5 L to start with and noticed that I have a lot more since I have done a Hijack This File (which I can only do in safe mode). I also did a scan with wmav as well and here is what the files say. I am presently trying to install critical updates so I can get SP2 back on the computer, but can't get by the critical update 329834. Also an NT Authority window pops up with System32\LSASS.exe terminated and windows will now shut down. Any help that I can get will be greatly appreciated.

    Have run both spybuster and Ad-AwareSE. Can only run HiJack This in Safe Mode.

    Download Itty Bitty Process Manager (IBProcMan.zip)(direct download) http://www.merijn.org/files/ibprocman.zip

    Try running that in normal mode - it is similar to 'taskmanager' in that you can stop running processes. Don't stop any yet, just copy the list to clipboard so I can check them and give advice. There are two icons at top right of the window that show the running processes. The save to clipboard is on the left.

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "<i>Open the Misc Tools Section</i>"
    2. Click "<i>Open Process manager</i>"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (<i>if present</i>) and click on (<i>highlight</i>) each of the following:

    <FONT color=#000000>C:\WINDOWS\System32\</font><FONT color=#ff0000>msconfig32.exe</font>

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "<i>Kill process</i>". Now, click "<i>Refresh</i>", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    Once stopped, try scanning with hijackthis again and post the log if you are able.

    All the above in normal mode please.

    Hi dhbass. First of all could you go here and have this file scanned. C:\WINDOWS\system32\msconfig32.exe

    ===============

    When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, up to service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccuring in the future.

    ===============

    Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

    1. Click "Free Online Scan".
    2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

    It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

    1. Select all available drives.
    2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
    3. Click "Scan".

    When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

    ===============

    Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    MyWebSearch

    The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\2cf41f1db14bc8f414e16e1555b77108\update\update.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusear...?p=ZBzeb032YYCA

    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocach...up1.0.0.8-2.cab

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    folders...

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

    -

    Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

    Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

    1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
    2) Next, "Enable all protection".
    3) Exit the program.

    -

    Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, rescan with hijackthis and post a new log.
    Let me know how things are now.

    A big thanks to you crunchie you da man!!!!!

    Everything seems to be be back to normal the last question I have for you is that msconfig32 still shows up in the startup tab of msconfig. How can I delete that. I believe that all instances of it are deleted. I've included a word doc with a pic of msconfig. That should about do it.

    Did you upload the msconfig32.exe file for a virus scan? Presuming you have, to remove it from msconfig, mark it for running starting but do not reboot. Scan with hijackthis and fix it there. Reboot and it should be gone.

    Hopefully this is just an orphaned entry.

    -

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    Search for...

    msconfig32.exe

    ...using "Start | Search...".

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, rescan with hijackthis and post a new log.
    Let me know how things are now.

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    ===============

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

    Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    [color=blue]Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    -

    If you have any more problems, post back.

    -

    Happy surfing,

    crunchie.
