    AdAware SE Personal (Free) Support

Probably most are already "aware" that the Lavasoft Support Forum for the free version of AdAware is down.
This site suggests it may not reappear
    http://tinyurl.com/7dtb4
Many (all?) of the AdAware SE Personal (Free) support staff have been let go.
The above site provides links to new support sites offered by non-Lavasoft people. But they will probably not be able to keep up to date on Add-On's, etc.
Time to learn to use SpybotS&D?

Nix--Actually that link is using the technique of shortening a long URL by using an intermediary (tinyurl.com) site. I guess that could cause problems if tinyurl.com has problems. The actual URL is

Lavasoft has been going thru some wierd stuff lately. They took a BIG bashing on the adware removal thing a while back and then the rumour surfaced that they were going to try to market a boxed paid version of AdAware.

I'm not sure what to think. As long as it's free and fairly effective, I'll use it. If it goes pay, there are already better alternatives (both paid and free)...

Is it just me or is the defs download available from http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuit...ublic/defs.zip seriously out of date ie 1/4/5 ??

I can't get the update from within AA to work at work so I usually manually download them from http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuit...ublic/defs.zip

And see this where they have invited the ex lavasoft forum people to join.

Nix--For me it is only the Lavasoft Forum which is down. I can download new reference files the same as always from the AdAware program window ("Check for Updates Now"), or I can get them here.\

(Under Updates Available in the middle.)
I suspect the edgesuite site is indeed out of date.

If I goto the link you provided and then look for the Latest definition file: SE1R40 20.04.2005 link it is http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuit...ublic/defs.zip and if I click on it the zip downloads but the definitions are for 1/4/05 so it must be some caching thing happening at work here.

They have also had their membership to ASAP (Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals) revoked until support "once again openly available".

Nix--Since I always update reference files from within the AdAware program, I never noticed that the site I mentioned
    http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
actually led to edgesuite to get the download. But when I downloaded the "latest" reference files from edgesuite just now, they were indeed dated April 20. Same result when I used the edgesuite link you provided. Now I did not got as far as actually installing these reference files, but, as I say, the date on them is April 20. Maybe things have changed in the last 24 hours and you should try again? Yesterday was April 21 and maybe edgesuite had not caught up.

Unzip the file which you have downloaded (defs.zip) to extract defs.ref and copy defs.ref to the directory where you have Adaware installed, overwriting the existing defs.ref. Now run Adaware as usual - it picks up the new ref file that you have installed.

But a word of caution. Be sure that the download DOES actually contain the new ref file. I have found that it can take up to 24 hours for the new ref file to become available. I downloaded what I thought was S1R57 earlier today but when I unzipped it I found the ref file dated 21 July - this is S1R56.

    Thanks for that.

My version of Adaware is using the original ''reflist.ref'' file. I had considered doing what you suggested but didn't want to mess Adaware up because at the moment I am on dial up and you know how long downloads take on that!
