    Internet Connection.

My step daughter gave me an old computer. I got it working and installed Windows 98se and a NIC card for internet connection via cable. I plugged it into my home network-but couldn't get it on the web. Windows sees the NIC, but I'm not connecting. Is there settings I can check? Or a tutorial that will outline what the setting should be to get a connection? I'm on cable. My network uses a hub and I pay for two computers. I shut down and disconnected my wifes computer before trying the old one. I've done this before with other computers without a problem so I feel it's a setting some place that I need to change-but what? Thanks.

    Greetings jmtjet,

Open the command prompt and type ipconfig and look at the ip address that it assigned for the network. It should be in the 192.168.x.x range with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0. If not then try "ipconfig/release" and then "ipconfig/renew".

If that doesn't work, then try testing each of the following. Report the exact message that you receive. Provide the ipconfig information on the working computer and the computer that is having problems so we can compare.

    1) Ping www.yahoo.com
    2) Ping 66.94.230.33

From your browser, type the following:

    3) Browse www.yahoo.com
    4) Browse 66.94.230.33

From each computer we can test connectivity and name resolution:

    5) Ping itself by name
    6) Ping itself by ip address
    7) Ping the other by name
    8) Ping the other by ip address
    9) Ping 127.0.0.1
    Eric
