    Question am I insane???

I just don't know what is wrong. Everything I plug in the wheel mouse, it just goes crazy, it open task bar and start menu properties, you know, the one from start>settings>task bar, opening by itself over and over again, and the pointer just going crazy, running all over the desktop. I have download wheel mouse driver from Microsoft, it still doing the same crazy thing. I can't even control the pointer. I have tried to plug in another wheel mouse, still the same thing. My system is w2K, computer is toshiba 490XCDT. I know it is an old computer, but it should not have anything to do with driving the mouse crazy?? Anyone knows why it happen???

Did you remove and plug in another mouse while the computer was running?

Do you have a USB port? If so, you should find a USB mouse and see if it does the same thing. If it does, it's most likely a driver issue. If not, it might be your PS/2 port acting up.

    Gezzzzz

People of all people should know what the problem is here. For crying out loud! You need to set the calibaration for your device. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Joystick or Gaming Option select the device and then calibrate the device.

    Have a nice day!

Have you done a thorough check for viri/trojans/worms/droppers? Been awhile, but there was one that caused this sort of problem...

I do not think I can calibrate the mouse. I went into control panel, follow the step you recommended, no mouse to calibrate. I have run virus check, no different. This is a ps/2 wheel mouse. so I can't use usb port. What else I can check???

That can happen when there's a conflict with the touchpad and the mouse. Disable the touchpad... Toshiba has a little utility built in to their laptops to do that.. You'll probably find it in start/programs. Can't remember what it's called but it will be obvious.

Oh, well, finally the mouse does not jumping all over the place. I have disable the wheel in mouse property. Although the wheel does not work, at lease the mouse itself is working. I still don't know why the microsoft wheel mouse driver does not support the wheel mouse on this computer. Anyway, thank you for your help. Thanks.

Hi, Fink, I have went up to Toshiba site and can't find the hwsetup.exe, but in any case, my mouse is working ok except I can't use the wheel. It is better than nothing.

I had the same problem with my Toshiba satellite 2180CDT.
The problem is due to the wheel mouse conflicting with the internal accupoint mouse. To fix the problem go into the BIOS (Reboot the machine, and at the red toshiba logo keeping pressing CTRL and ESC until it comes up to check the system and then press F1) And change the option of pointing device to auto-selected.
Then press the End key to save changes.
You will then be able to use the PS/2 Wheel mouse without any problems.
    Hope that it helps.
    Yuri.
