The difference between managed and unmanaged network equipment (besides price) is that the managed equipment can be monitored and controlled with standard network management software (also pricey).

A managed switch gives you control to tweak various performance, security and operational parameters down to the individual port level. I provides greater management and logging capability. Managed switches are really geared more for non-home type network environments.
