Missing .vxd file
Every time I start up my Tosh Tecra 780 (OS WIN 95) I get the message: cannot find a device file needed to run Win or Win app. System.ini file refers to this device file….no longer exists etc, etc.
C:\windows\system\audwrap.vxd is the file it is looking for. Does anybody know what it is and how I can get it back. I probably inadvertently deleted it when cleaning up “old “ files!!!!

Could it be in your Recycle Bin still?
I pulled out my Win95 CD and it doesn't seem to be on there.

Sadly, this is something that has going on for a long time and my recycle bin is clean!
I have only just fallen across this wonderful community so I thought I would ask the question.
I tried searching my cad file as well with no luck. I don't think it's an os problem but then I could be wrong!
Thanks very much for trying.

If your computer boots and operates properly, then you can remove any reference to audwrap.vxd from your system.ini file, and the error message will go away.

I am extremely nervous about going in to that area of the system in case I mess things up!
Could you give me clue as to where I must go and how to do it.
I apologise if I sound moronic but bravery was never my strong point.

Its been a while since I used 95, so we'll have to wing it.
Open Windows Explorer and click on View and Folder Options, and under the View tab, make sure that show all files is checked. Ok out of there.
You will find System.ini in C:\Windows. Navigate to it in Explorer and right click on it and select open, or open with. If you use open with, select notepad from the list. Be sure that you uncheck the box that says "Always use this program to open this type of file".
With system.ini open in notepad, go to file and save as, and save it as System.old. This will be your backup. Close notepad. Reopen system.ini in notepad again (watch for the checkmark!) and in the menu go to Search, Find and find audwrap.vxd and delete the line it appears on. Close notepad and say yes to saving your changes. Reboot, and Bob's your uncle.

I've never been that lucky to have an Uncle Bob and this time was no exception. Followed your instructions to the letter and the file could not be found via the search mode and I have done a visual on the file in notepad and cannot fine the file either.
I have to say your instructions were clear, even to me!
Strange, isn't it?
Any other ideas?
Having just rebooted the computer I notice that it mentions windows registry OR system.ini. Could the problem be solved in the registry.......again some trepidaton.....

That good ol' or.
If the message states the problem is with either SYSTEM.INI or the Registry, and you found no reference to that file in SYSTEM.INI, it would seem that the Registry would contain the the reference to the missing file.
From the name of the file, it's probably a driver for your audio card. Assumedly, reinstalling the drivers for your audio card will replace the file.
You should back up the Registry before proceeding with the Registry edit-- in case modifications to your Registry prevent your system from booting properly (In Win98, SCANREG /RESTORE from DOS mode will allow you to pick a recent copy of the registry to restore from, but Win95 does not have that option. You will have to make copies of USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT for backup purposes.) You can edit the Registry by going to Start, Run, and typing regedit in the box and clicking Ok. Once there, just hit Ctrl-F and type audwrap.vxd in the box and hitting "Find Next." You will probably get a hit on that search, from there, just delete the key from the right-hand pane containing that value. Hitting Ctrl-F again will search for further instances of that key. Removing all keys referencing AUDWRAP.VXD should alleviate the error message.

Leurgy and AlaricD,
Thankyou both very much for your help in this matter. I summoned up the courage and did the business in regedit and have successfully solved the problem.
I cannot tell you how happy I feel abut getting rid of an annoying "itch" that I have had for so long and for having found this excellent message board.
I am off to join a thread in the win95 forum now that may help me understand another question I have.
From a very junior member, again, many thanks.
