Windows XP and 200GB external Firewire issue with size

Client has a Western Digital External Firewire 200GB WD2000JB and a COMPAQ EVO N1020V.
Compaq is running Windows XP with SP1a installed. PC will only recognise 137GB of the 200GB drive, Compaq Notebook is running latest BIOS (BIOS F08)

Went onto the WD site and followed the following:

***********************************************

Question
Why is the full capacity of EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) not recognized in Windows 2000/XP?

Answer
Problem
The full capacity of EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) is not recognized in Windows 2000/XP.

Resolution
48-bit LBA support is necessary for drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA support in Windows 2000/XP:

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) must be installed for Windows XP versions prior to August 2002. For information about SP1, see Microsoft Article 322389.

The system must have a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed. This includes EIDE controller card BIOSs.

You must enable the support in the Windows registry.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base articles listed below provide important information about 48-bit LBA support for drives larger than 137GB in Windows. For full details, carefully review the relevant article.

How to Enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows XP.

Note: The above articles reference making necessary registry changes. It is strongly advised that you contact Microsoft directly for assistance.

here is a list of other answers on the WD site that has to do with SIZE LIMITATIONS:

anyone got any ideas?

http://www.wiebetech.com/ATA6firewire.htm would lead me to believe that there is no hope for your drive.

did they include a device driver in the package? I can't find one on the site.

WD sorta babbles about data lifeguard and 137GB but I can't tell if it will help without a drive to experiment on. http://support.wdc.com/download/dlg/dlginstall_10_0.exe

Whats the model number on the firewire controller?

If WD doesn't give you much help, I would be a jerk and request an RMA until they fixed the problem.

Red face

Ok, will look into those sites later, thankyou very much. This was the response I got from WD this morning:

Did you put the drive in an external firewire enclosure?

....so if there level of support is that GOOD! there is no hope for this drive.

I don't know the model of the firewire controller? It is housed inside a COMPAQ EVO N1020V

1394 Firewire Support

The 1394 Firewire connector uses the Texas Instruments TSB43BA22 1394 controller. The connector is a 4-pin non-powered 1394 connector. The signal is passed through to the port replicator when the system is docked.
