tried to update WMP to 7.1-Failed!!

I am hoping someone with extpertise with Windows Media Player can offer some help!! Here's the series of events . . .
-downloaded the 7.1 to install. Began installation, seems to go fine then on reboot the computer froze. after that had registry errors so I restored a previous good registry.
-the icon for 7.1 was on the desktop-but no go.
-downloaded again, tried to install, and it will not reinstall.

The previous 6.?? is still working at this time, but some clips, videos that we would like to open will not allow us to, which was the reason for the upgrade to begin with. After much readiing, have decided to stay away from WMP9. I think my machine is too old and slow. Win98 with all updates.

In the Programs Folder\Windows Media\ it lists both the wmplayer.exe (7.1) and the mplayer2.exe.
7.1 does not appear under Add/Remove programs either, only the 6.?.

Why not try WMP9 and make your own assessment.
I am running it on a Pentium 2/350 an it has been trouble free.

You could try running the install for 6.4 and see if that fixes it. There's a download for it here:

You might want to also download 7.1 from there just in case there was something wrong with the one you previously downloaded. I tried both the beta and the final versions of WMP 9 and I won't touch them again. You'd be wise to stay away from them.

Gerdog, thanks for the reply. Will try to reiinstall the 6.4 as you suggested. I am wondering though, will that remove the 7.1 that is appearing on my PC now?

After reading numerous posts, i will stand clear of the 9 as it appears to be more trouble than it's worth.

I once had to "uninstall" version 9 beta by just deleting its files and reinstalling 7.1. That's probably what you should try by deleting 7.1's files first. With Windows XP, I had to reinstall the operating system over itself to get version 8 back, but you should be able to repair 6.4 just by running the installation setup.

Thanks again Gerdog. So basically just delete those files related to 7.1 in under Programs\Windows Media\Player?

Will give it a try tonight and let you know the result.

I just wanted to let you know that I have been unable to try the suggestions for this reinstall due to other problems with my PC-mainly all my drives are running in MS Dos Compatibility Mode!!

Didn't want you to think I wasn't posting back!!
