Explorer freezes when copying to CD

When using windows (ME) explorer to copy files to a CD-R which has been formatted as Direct CD the process will start to copy some files then the PC locks up (reboot required).
If only one or two files are copied then this may work.
Any ideas?

Welcome to the boards. Before attempting to copy, do a ctrl/alt/del, and end task on everything but systray and Explorer, then try once more.

This really is a shot in the dark, but do you have a folder named C_Dilla anywhere on your hard drive? This is a kind of software copy protection, installed by TurboTax and others. It will disable the CD-R, with no warning if 'it' determines you are trying to copy something 'protected'.

DirectCD is not really designed for moving large amounts of data at once. It's possible newer versions are better at it, I suppose, but since it was an architectural decision, I doubt it. More than about 50MB or so will sometimes cause DCD to go into a coma, which eventually causes the computer to fall down. Not every installation seems to do it, but quite a few do, and it is lab-repeatable (the classic 'it's not a bug, it's a feature').

Use the multisession capability of standard mastering software to burn large amounts of data (it's probably faster anyway). In fact, a solid argument can be made that mastered multisession is the only wise way to burn data, but if you insist on using the engineering marvel known as DirectCD, you should try to use it in small doses.
