block a computer from downloading programs off the internet. Here's the problem. At work, there is a "community" internet computer that everyone uses and they have yet to pass up an executable that they haven't downloaded (even though they've been warned against it). They put all kind of stuff such as WeatherBug, Gator, ICQ, ect. The sys tray goes halfway across the toolbar and I spend half my time removing these programs and working on the computer. We are replacing that computer and I want to put a stop to it. If there isn't a way to stop it in IE, is there a program available where I can put a block on program downloads with perhaps a password. I purchased NetNanny 4 today, but it doesn't seem to be the answer. Thanks!

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Security | Internet | Custom Level

In the Downloads section, ensure that File download is set to Disable

Alternatively, you could set it in the registry, using this regedit from
see Winguides

In case they manage to get around this, you might want to use this one too

Finally, If they are particularly competent, make sure they can't get around all your hard work , by disabling regedit

If the new comp will have WinXP ,then you can stop programs from being installed by giving the user account "limited" rights.

Thanks for the help. I checked out WinGuard Pro and that looks pretty good. Also, I ordered the new computer with an XP OS so that may work also. Y'all are the best.

Well, I got the WinGuard Pro Premium w/ Lock Files + Folders program. The WinGuard program works great. I set it up on the new computer and tried to install several programs and, w/o the password, it won't work. So, that works perfectly. I've also locked various applications such as File Manager, Regedit, ect.

I've yet to get the Lock Files + Folders to work right. I tried to install it, but everytime I try to open the program, a Setup window pops open and then disappears. When I add a folder to the Lock window, it accepts it, but lets me in everytime w/o requireing a password. This is not a huge deal right now, and I'll work on it some more later. Overall, I have been very pleased with the program. Also thanks for the follow-up!
