Microsoft tried to create a piece of c**p and they succeeded.
In my view they tried almost as hard with XP.
Both operating systems resided on my drive for less than a half hour before they got dumped.
ME ran out of system resources just sitting there and XP took so much longer to load than did Win2k.

So after you got rid of the trash, did you get a real Operating system, like Windows 2000?
It is so much better than both of the others you mention in the post.

    Don't know.

I've been using WinMe for 3 years with only 2 self imposed system stuff ups.

One when I typed del *.* at the C:\Windows\> DOS prompt at 3.45am in the morning

Another when I modified the registry at my own risk and deleted the wrong keys.

    Other than that no problems.

I used it for a couple of years. Liked it much more than 98.

It "really" comes down to one thing, that is, it's not Windows 2000.

What I ask is what is wrong with all the people who can't understand that it isn't Windows 2000...

There was a lot of expectation generated that with the year 2000, the two lines of Windows OS would be merged into one highly usable, stable, high performance etc OS. There was a lot of disappointment when NT5 was released as the industrial strength Win2000 and some extra features were grafted onto the Win9x platform and there was the consumer grade WinME.

A lot of criticism of ME rose to the heights of "c**p" and "trash", but when you examine what's being said, it comes down to "it's not 2000".

Many many people use WinME without drama, in suitable circumstances. It is probably marginally less stable than Win98 SE, because it has more stuff loaded onto the same platform base.

But in reality it comes down to horses for courses. If you want or need Win2000, then use it, it's very good. If WinME works for someone, then that's what matters.

Windows ME has worked as well as I have needed it to, and I still use it today. I don't plan on changing until my next PC build, by which time MS should have something even better than XP (which I've had to reinstall twice on work computers).

Windows ME lacks resources, but it's no worse than 98. When you disable all of the extra filler, it's basically just 98 anyway with a few nice enhancements. When it comes to memory leaks, most of the time the cause isn't the operating system itself - it's poorly coded software

Nothing. A great OS, has served me well for over 2 years now. Fast, uses system resources efficiently, can't remember when it last crashed, so I've stuck with it and will continue to do so.

On the other hand, I upgraded my 1gig ME machine to 2000 and thought I had died and gone to Heaven. Swear 2000 made the machine 25% faster. It's like it actually used the hardware that was installed...

try to make a boot disk with win ME... go on, format it and try the old "sys a:"

Yep, that's right. "No system to transfer."

Just go into the Add / Remove applet of the control panel and select the Emergency Boot Disk option to create an EBD.

Remove everything from the floppy other than
    • command.com
    • io.sys
    • msdos.sys

and you have the equivalent of running the sys a: command

You can then add your own autoexec.bat and config.sys files to load up dos drivers etc

Wasn't asking how to get around it, just saying it sucks.
