    Getting out of Safe mode

    Win 98

After a power outage, because the compter wasn't shut down correctly, I have been stuck in Safe Mode. When this happened before, I have been able to click 'Restart', click OK, and press and hold the 'Control' key to bring up the Window 98 Startup Window. None of this working now. Help to get out of Safe Mode would be appreciated.

Reboot and when you see starting windows hold down or tap several times the F8 key, should bring the menu up. Select SAFE MODE. Now go start shutdown.

Now turn power off then back on and see if it boots normally.

Does it actually say 'Safe Mode' in the 4 corners of the screen - or is it simply a 16-bit color 640x480 display?

You should be able to get the boot menu by holding down the Ctrl key during the boot (just before starting windows msg.) instead of using F8

Ok, so you can get into SAFE MODE.

Right click on "My Computer" go to Properties then to Device Manager.

Click on the + signs All of them and highlight and remove all duplicate entries (some Windows may not allow you too -thats OK)

Now Get out and try and restart it.

If that doesn't work then use the Win 98 Bootdisk to get to the A:\> prompt

At the A: prompt type the following hitting the <enter> key after each line:

    c:
    cd\windows\command
    scanreg /restore (notice the space)

You should get a choice of registries to restore. Select one that was before the problem.

Murf, there weren't any duplicates so I used the bootdisk. The following message came up: This CD-ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled. Recently my computer crashed and when it went in for repair the processor was replaced. Even tho' they had the original bootdisk they must have used another one. ??? I think that I'm fried.

Zeddy are you using the Win98 CD?

What Murf is wanting you to use is a Boot Disk or Startup Disk
And we would like help in return.....post back if it worked or not.

    NAW

    Just make a new one.

    easier just go HERE

Download the Windows 98 Custom or the Windows 98SE, doesn't matter.

remember where you downloaded it to. Now double click on that file and expand/extract the files to a clean floppy.

    Now reboot with this floppy.

Shut down your computer, insert the floppy disk, turn on computer. It should do a floppy search just before the Win98 splash screen and find the floppy and leave you at an A:\ prompt.

    Then do as Murf said...

Thanks all for helping, but obviously I'm not doing this correctly. When dl from the disk it stops at A:\> and I entered 98c.exe with no results. This is a new stuff for me as you can tell. Probably should leave it until tomorrow. Maybe some miracle will happen overnight and it will be fixed when I turn it on tomorrow. I'm frazzled big time so I'll leave it for now. Any other suggestions that I can try tomorrow would be greatly appreciated and thanks again for the help tonight.

When you get to the A:

    then type

    c:

    hit the ENTER key

    then type

    cd\windows\command

    hit the Enter key

    then type

    scanreg /restore

Thanks to all who helped solve the problem. I now have the screen looking the way it should. I'm embarrased to tell you that it was as IMM suggested, but I have no idea how it got there. It's been great to have gone through what Murf, Virtual Me and Ridgerunr said to do because I learned so much. When posting back the results, I hope the latter group aren't gritting their teeth. Best to know I guess.

    Zeddy don't be embarrased.

We all have been there at one time or another......some (ahummm....Me) still have to come back to look up how to do some things, but VirtualDr is one of the best places to hang out/lurk and find out how to do or fix something. Even if you aren't have any troubles.
