New AVG 8.0 has crippled my PC
I used AVG free edition for 2 to 3 years then bought a 2 year sub. to their AV G anti virus protection.
I got notified of the new 8.0 and downloaded it yesterday and had nothing but problems since.
The down load completed with just one miss step, and it was all completed and I had the new 8.0 working.
Now my PC is very slow, and some things just wont work now. I have to shut off the virus protection to load or post new article on to my EBay. I never had a problem until I went with the 8.0. many other things are working very slow. I also have to shut AVG off to work on one of my web sites that is on Microsoft Office Live.
I can't get a reply from AVG and am going to have to remove 8.0 and try to download something that will work.
Does anyone have any suggestions. I'm 75 and not really that computer literate on all the computer functions.
thanks
Jack

Jack: Unfortunately you are not alone. AVG 8.0 is a VERY different animal than it's predecessor. There are many stories similar to yours all over the web.
IMO, until AVG gets some 8.0 patches released, you will either have to put up with the sluggishness or go back to AVG 7.5.

Re; New 8.0 has crippled my computer
Thanks everyone
I am running windows vista Home Premium
My computer is a Medion, with AMD athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core Processor. 1.87GB,
I have been thrilled with the speed of this computer, until lately.
Graphics ATI Radeon Express 1250
Gaming graphics 831 MB total available graphics memory
Primary hard disk 217 free of 274 GB total.
Hope this helps some.
I am thinking I will try to go back to AVG 7.5 today. I never had any problems with it.
Thanks for any information
Jack

Hi Jack Your system should be more than good enough for any antivirus. So given the issues highlighted by Han may I suggest an alternative perhaps uninstalling AVG and trying the freeware Avast and see if the issue resolves to your satisfaction.

One thing you could try checking is the Scheduler in AVG to see if it is running a full system scan every time your start your PC. Disable it and see if that makes any difference.
FWIW, I don't like AVG current method of advertising v8.0 (popups on daily basis).

HEY!!! MY COMPUTER IS WORKING AGAIN
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP FROM EVERYONE.
I ENDED UP DELETING ALL OF AVG'S 8.0 AND DOWN LOADED (thanks to 104456) AVAST.
I haven't tried EBay yet, but I did try my church web site, and I can go there and make changes in it. I don't remember if I can post a link to my church web site here or not, so I won't for now.
Thanks again to everyone.

AVG 8.0 is proving it's self to be a lemon. I've been reading on other forums that people are going as far as to re-format their hard drives to get rid of it.
The true test of character is not how much we
know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do

Just to let everyone know that all my computer functions seem to be working fine again with the free AVAST antivirus software running.
I have been on and made changes on my church web site, and I have also put a few items on EBay today and all the features seem to be working at normal speed.
I again want to thank everyone for your input.
I had no problems uninstalling the AVG 8.0 antivirus, and installing the new AVAST. It all worked better than I anticipated.
After a few days of virus scanning, and seeing how it all is working I will know for sure if I like the new program.
Best wishes to you all.

Do you have "Threatfire" installed. That could be the problem. See this post:

For anyone wanting to avoid this mess and stay with 7.5, what date has Grisoft officially said they will stop supporting AVG 7.5 (for updates, etc.?) One source told me May 31 and others have said the end of the year. So I'm trying to figure out which is right...

Thanks Doc! Adding yours to the list, so far I've found 3 dates. May 31, July 31? (or August 31?) and December 31. No matter what, AVG users will have to move on. And at this point, they are assuming a big risk if they move to the buggy 8.0...

Add-on note;
I had the same problem yesterday and today.
Tried to uninstall 7.5 and froze my system.
After uninstall through program and add/remove...
I loaded 8.0 and that did a real sloooowww number.
came here, and saw this posting, went back and deleted any and in site in program and or registry like AVG,Grisoft, and than reloaded 7.5 and updated and running as before. Let's hope that this version is good till 2009.
Maybe, ver 8.0 should be debugged by than.
