USB ports in NT
Hi,
I have an older computer with windows NT4.
I have updated it at windows update, but I am having trouble getting the USB ports to work.
Does anyone know how to get the USB ports to work.
Thanks in advance.

NT does not have built-in support for USB. Support for NT ended six years ago, so I doubt anyone has anything worthwhile for a workaround. You might consider going to Windows 2000, as the system requirements accomodate older computers and is a big improvement all around. (98SE will work, too, but support for that ended last July.)

USB for NT yes
There are several options but most providers want $40.
Here is a link to a free work around.
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/Intea01i.exe
Download and install it after a reboot your USB ports should work.
Microsoft may not support NT anymore but there are a few of us antique collectors that can help.
Good Luck!

Use USB ports in Win NT.
Here is a better set of instructions than I put in my last post.
Here is a link to download a free work around.
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/utility/Intea01i.exe
If you haven’t installed all updates from windows update, you should before you install the USB drivers.
Download and start the installer.
After the installer starts a screen will come up with 5 options.
I unchecked the[Camera Drivers] & [Edgeport Drivers], I had no need for them.
I left the [USB Stack], [USB HID Drivers], & [USB Mass Storage Driver] checked for installation.
After it completes your USB ports should work.
You will see a new icon by your clock.
Although this is provided by Dell it works on all NT systems as far as I know. I just installed it on an old Compaq.
This is a direct link to the download page.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R69735&formatcnt=1&fileid=90732
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled Intea01i.exe.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r69735. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r69735 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
If you are having problems with USB 2.0 devices not working this patch will cause the device to operate in USB 1.1 mode.
The BIOS enables the EHCI controller by default. This sets the USB 2.0 mode for the system. However, for NT4 systems there are no USB 2.0 drivers as of now. Due to this the USB 2.0 devices are not accessible in NT4 systems with recent BIOS’s. This utility is an executable that sets the USB 1.1 mode on the NT4 systems so that the USB 2.0 devices are accessible by defaulting to USB 1.1 mode. The USB 1.1 mode persists on reboot.
http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R86580&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=113604
Note: This patch must be installed for NT4 systems. Please install the USB Inside out Networks USb 1.x driver before this patch.
Good Luck!

Where in the original posters first message do you see he/she has a Dell computer? If you install Dell drivers on a non Dell computer, they probably won't work.
Also, member hasn't been back since first post, might make these posts of your irrelevant.

Although I'd be making sure to do a full backup before installing anything not specifically designed for my system.

The free download is provided by Dell but the software is provided by Insideout Networks and is for any computer running windows NT that has USB ports.
You should stop posting your irrelevant opinions.

NT and FAT32
Windows NT does not support FAT 32 and that is the file system used on your flash drive.
You can format your flash drive to NTFS, but it may kill it.
There is a freeware driver package, down load and install the FAT32 exe.
Link to download:
http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Fat32.exe
Link to web site:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Fat32.html
After you install and reboot you should be able to read and write to FAT32 drives.

You should.
And not speak in that way to a member of staff on this site, as it only takes a click of the mouse to stop you talking to yourself. Think about it.

Gee, what a coincidence, the original poster and Mr. Revenge come from the same state! And..guess what else? They use the same ISP!! And..wait a minute...they have the same IP TOO!!!!!!!!!
A rather transparent attempt to gain credibility by posting to yourself, and then coming up with an answer. You tripped up in not using another IP, and acting on information you failed to give in the 1st post as your alter ego. Your memberships are both terminated as of now.
There is nothing to fear, but life itself.
