Computer wont wake up from sleep/hibernate
A couple of days ago, after leaving my computer on overnight, I checked my email in the morning and then shut it down (or attempted to). When I returned home from work the same day, I went to turn the computer on and realized that the button was glowing orange as it does when it is hibernating (instead of glowing green as it does when "awake"). The power button would not wake up the computer, nor would the mouse or keyboard. I held the power button in to turn the computer off. Now when I turn the computer on, it goes directly into hibernate mode (power button glows orange) and does not attempt to return to Windows ME. It is completely silent and unresponsive, as though the power is off, except that the power is on. I took the back panel off of the computer and verified that all of the cards were firmly in place and not dislodged. I also disconnected everything but keyboard and mouse and nothing changed. Any ideas?

Welcome to VDr
It could be a PSU problem, if you have or can borrow a Multimeter you can test your PSU voltages with this guide: http://www.ochardware.com/articles/psuvolt/psuvolt.html or you could purchase a small dedicated PSU tester like this: http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews5/ezpower.html
Make sure everything is seated and plugged in correctly inside. When you try to boot is there any sign of life from any fans? or drives?

No, there is no sign of life at all when I turn it on. Absolutely silent. It's as if the computer is off but the light is glowing orange. The fan doesn't run. One time when I turned it on I heard a really faint high-pitched whine, but that faded away.

Hmmm, can/have you run any tests on the PSU? if you can narrow it down a little bit by taking the PSU out of the equation you'll be one step closer to getting this back up and running....looks like something has died though, unfortunately. so it's going to cost you something to repair i think.

If high pitch noise was from the PSU,
PSU is likely defective.
Cheers.
