    lost files

Got a friend that tryed to move all of her word files from 3.1 to floppy when the disk was full she just put another in an clicked retry. She then placed them on her new win2000 system but half of them are missing off the disk and there are none showing on the old system. Is there a recovery program for 3.1 and is it possible the files are gone

It's been a long time since I used 3.1 so I hope my memory is correct.

I presume your friend's documents are MS Word. They have the file extension of .doc.

    Goto start>find

    It will ask find what?

Type in '*.doc' without the quotes and hit find now. This will display every word document stored on the pc.

Hope this helps to find the missing files.

If they were "moved" to the floppy, they are probably both places. The command is a two part command (Windows or DOS) where it copies a file to the new location then deletes it from the old location. If you run UNDELETE at DOS, you may be able to recover the files. This will possibly recover them fully if the computer was not use since the files were moved. Saving a new file will overwrite a deleted file making it no longer recoverable. There are more sophisicated recovery programs available as well.

Undelete will work on a floppy as well. If the files were copied and somehow deleted, they may still be on the floppy. However, if the floppy has had other files written to it, it is gone as above.

    Type :
    help undelete

at the DOS prompt for more information about it or
    undelete /?
    for it switches and usage.

I seem to remember if you just drag and drop files from one drive to another (in this case... A:\ ) in File Manager, they are 'moved'. To 'copy' files, it was necessary in 3.x to hold down the 'Ctrl' key while dragging and dropping.

It would not be unusual for someone used to 9.x to inadvertantly drag and drop without realizing they were 'moving' a file. Thus they are probably gone.

    IMHO,
