Combofix says:
REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY MODE
which means, you didn't update it, when asked by Combofix.
In the future, please, follow prompts.
Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run
Type in:
combofix /u
Note the space between the "combofix" and the "/u"
Restart computer.
I need fresh HJT log.
How is your computer doing?

Thank, the PC seems to be OK.
I'll do the rest in about one or two hours, when I come back from some errands. I understand you advise to download Combo again in a while, and run it periodically?

No. Use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware for occasional scans.
Combofix is needed for "special" needs and it shouldn't be run without supervision.

Thanks for the instructions.
I uninstalled Combo. Now I have another problem: after I R clicked on Windows Defender and then on Open, it opened. I (naively) decided that WD is now running and clicked on Check for Updates now. After awhile it showed me this: see attached screen shot - and WD Systray icon still has a yellow circle with an exclamation point. What should I do?
Incidentally, I just noticed that HijackThis logfile is not posted - should I post it now?

Yes.
I really care less about Windows Defender as I regard it useless, but we can take another look, when your computer is declared clean.

Dear Broni,
Sorry for the delay - I clicked on Post Quick Reply and left. Two hours later the post was still there with a usual reminder "text is too long".
Anyhow, if you do not mind, I have a couple more questions. Do you have any opinion about this:
Tip #62: Improve PC Memory Management (All Windows Versions)
Cacheman 7 is an application designed to improve the performance of
your computer by optimizing several caches, managing RAM and fine
tuning a number of system settings. Unlike other tuneup utilities,
Cacheman works as a system service, minimizing resource usage and
tweaking Windows at system-level. Auto-Optimization makes it
suitable for novice and intermediate users yet it is also powerful
and versatile enough for computer experts. Backups of settings
ensure that all user modifications can be reversed with a single
click.
Cacheman takes Memory Management to the next level. You can define
which applications have the most importance to you. When your
system runs out of RAM Cacheman will take it away from non
essential programs and give it to the important ones. This is a
drastic improvement to the default Windows memory management. You
can even limit the RAM amount a specific application can use.
Auto-Optimize is a one-click function which will examine your
system and apply automatically best settings and system tweaks in
order to improve performance and stability. You can also make your
computer more suitable for a specific task by selecting individual
Auto-Optimization profiles like "Gaming Computer" or "Network
Server".
Give Cacheman 7 a test run today and see how much faster it can
make your computer run!
Download Cacheman 7:

Editor, Windows Tips & Tricks
Another one more of a nuisance - every time I open Micro$soft Word, a box pops up:
This version of Word is not Genuine..
There are two buttons Remind Me Later and Learn More. After I click the latter a webpage opens offering to download a "genuine" version for $149! My version was installed and registered ~ 6 years ago and was genuine enough till a few days ago, when this "pseudomalware" appeared first. Is there any way to get read of it?
The last thing I'd like to know is this (sheer curiosity :-)): I think that any antimalware SW has to have signature database in its memory (e. g. Avast AV and NoAdware5 download their signatures almost every day). Or I am wrong and there are some "intelligent" programs that can recognize viruses, etc. by their behavior/structure?
TIA,
Y.

To answer your questions...
1. Miracle tools don't work. The only way to improve your RAM is to buy more.
2. You'll have to start new topic on this in appropriate forum.
================================================================
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
- Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
- Accept any prompts.
- Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
- Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.
Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.
===================================================================
Uninstall AskBarDis and Free Ram Optimizer (waste of resources) through Add\Remove.
==================================================================
Disable Windows Defender, as it'll interfere with cleaning process:
- Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
- Click Tools
then...
++ Windows XP:
- Click General Settings
- Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
- Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection
- After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
- Close Windows Defender
++ Windows Vista:
- Click Options
- Under Administrator options, clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.
Enable Windows Defender, when all cleaning is done.

Thank you, Broni.
I already printed out your instructions and will start in a minute by downloading JavaRa.
To answer your questions...
1. Miracle tools don't work. The only way to improve your RAM is to buy more.
2. You'll have to start new topic on this in appropriate forum.
Answer 2 is a bit unclear: does it refer to my "curiosity" question? If so, I'll start a new discussion, I am really curious (although I doubt that anyone has the answer - even you do not know about "intelligent" antimalware SW.
As far as disabling Windows Defender: it is disabled already and I cannot bring it back to life. Your instructions are the same as Windows' ones but I don't have [B]General Settings[B] in Tools, nor Real Time Protection Options - see attached. Perhaps, as you suggested yesterday, I should not pay much attention to WD.

Broni,
I could not delete Ask Toolbar because "File C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\unins000dat does not exsist. Cannot uninstall. So, .72MB of C is wasted (toolbar itself is not present); Free Ram Optimizer icon is present in Systray, yet no such program is listed in Add\Remove. Something called RAM Booster is present in the systray and from time to time it offers me to remove ...MB of junk files.
I have a problem with JavaRa - at no point it offered me language choice, there is no Select button, I could not find Remove Older Versions. I guess, I need more instructions.

Very good
Your computer is clean
1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.
2. Turn off System Restore:
- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK
3. Restart computer.
4. Turn System Restore on.
5. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.
6. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!
7. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
8. Run defrag at your convenience.
9. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
10. Please, let me know, how is your computer doing.

Thanks again.
While checking *Windows Update* this page opened:
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:
! *Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
*Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem
Should I click *Continue* or close/skip this page?
A question: Your step 6 (at the bottom) *If any *Trojan* was listed...* Listed where?
I did have TFC already. How often do you recommend to run it?
Your last question will be answered after I spend at least several hours with my PC. So far, so good.
