Hi Broni,
thank you so much for your help - it is very much appreciated! I'll carry out the last couple of instructions next time I'm on that machine an let you know how it is running - as we approached the end of these checks it was already sounding like it was under a lot less stress and was running more smoothly.
I'm not sure how it got infected, (I'll go through the 'how did I get infected' info to see if there are any clues there), but I work with a lot of freelance translators which means I'm receiving text an graphic files from all around the world every working day. So far Symantec/windows firewall has always scanned mails or alerted to me about anything else affecting the PC but was oblivious to this latest one, so if you are aware of something that is more efficient than that I'd certainly like to know.
If it didn't come in via a mail it could have arrived while checking out potential translator websites - anyway, as long as it is gone now, that's the main thing!
thanks again for the help,
all the best,
Monkton

You're welcome
1. WOT will help you with identifying dangerous sites.
2. Even with AV program active, I always scan ANY email attachment separately. Even, if it comes from someone, I know.

Ach! Broni - I was only coming back here today to say how well everything was going. Before I did it, I went to check a mail on my Yahoo account and the whole thing kicked off again (firewall forced to close, so machine instantly gets flooded again with grot). It was exactly what I was doing when I was affected last time but I thought that a 'big' site like Yahoo would be safe enough. Anyhow, at least I know where the problem is and I shan't be back there. Once I got over my disbelief that it had happened again I ran TFC, Malwarebytes and "Hijack this" so here are their logs. Really sorry to put you through the tedium of this again. Maybe there is less to do this time. He said, hopefully.

First of all, I doubt, going to Yahoo site could have caused all this havoc.
Secondly, most of infections detected by Malwarebytes are in your restore points. Makes me wonder, if you really did reset restore points as asked in my reply #23....
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
- Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
- Close any open browsers.
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE 1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
- Close any open browsers.
- WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
- Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
- If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
- Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
- When finished, it will produce a report for you.
- Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Hi Broni,
yup - I was surprised that it happened at the same place too (and has never happened before in 11 years of visiting it, so maybe it is just coincidence). I did the system restore as requested, but I might need to look into this again at the end - I've had problems doing this is in the past (I usually get an error message saying that the machine could not be returned to an earlier point). I was told to increase the 'Disk space to use' - so this was set to max (i.e. 12% 18309MB). I did the system restore last weekend as requested and didn't get an error message but I do remember a message saying that one .dll could not be found (dont' remember which but it may have been "rst..." something). I just clicked OK and everything seemed to be fine. Now, looking at my system restore 'calendar' I can see that there are restore points going back before last weekend which I guess should not be there if the system restore had worked correctly.
Anyway - back to today. Here is the "combo fix" log and the latest "Hijack this" log in 3 mails...
