PDF files aren't really designed to be edited; it's a publishing format and not one meant for working documents. If you can avoid the need to edit them, that's the ideal situation.
Otherwise, what sort of editing in particular do you need to do? Is it just rearranging / deleting entire pages, or do you want to treat a PDF like a Word document?
Safe computing is a habit, not a toolkit.

Although Adobe provide the PDF Reader as freeware, the full Adobe PDF suite is a document creation package providing the full publishing suite you'd expect. Unfortunately it's quite expensive. I've seen bits of information of products that convert word docs to pdf and vis-a-vis but I've not evaluated any.
I occasionally need to edit documents in pdf but I've not tried any yet.
If the consensus is that there really not to clever then I'll probably opt for
a converter to flip from a word document to pdf.
So far I've come across 'PDF Editor' and 'WinPDF' but I've not tried either as
yet. Any input is thus appreciated.
Thanks.
TF.

I haven't tried it myself (work provides me with Acrobat 7, which is expensive and clunky IMO), but I've read some rave reviews of Scansoft PDF Converter Pro:
