Yes, because Windows 98 doesn't recognise USB memory sticks!
Seriously, though, Win98 doesn't have any device driver for a USB memory stick, WinME was the first to natively recognise these as a removable drive.
You'll need to load a driver for 98 to be able to recognise the memory stick, what type is it? You can probably download a driver from the manufacturer's website, or there are some generic drivers about which will work with many USB flash drives.

Windows 98SE(Second Edition) supports USB. That may be your trouble--if you are not running SE or a later windows version. Good luck to you. And let us know of your success.

I have a Creative MP3 player which is recognised in WinMe as a USB Mass Storage device and when first plugged in asked for the USB drivers.
In Win98SE it had to have a USB driver installation program run first.
So in my case WinMe recognised the device whereas Win98SE needed to be 'told' about it first by installing the drivers which concurs with Platypus explanation.

Here's all the W98 drivers for STF

You will have to know if it uses USB 1.1 or 2.0
Probly have to know the model.

The FAQ section at the website oldhermit noted goes into detail of how to make the STF drive run in Win 98SE. You will need to know which model of flash drive you are using...

Didn't say he didn't need drivers for his STF memory stick; only said he needed Win98SE, or later OS to have use of his USB. Hope you succeed soon. Those sticks are very good to use.

Buf, win98 (se) may indeed have better support for USB, but 98 ( fe ) , supports basic USB and so I believe did later editions of 95 , with appropriate drivers of course.
Using Win98 FE with 2x 4port usb hubs, usb mouse, usb keyboard, usb broadband modem, usb printer, usb 12in1 memory card reader and usb connected Casio digital camera ...

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.

Don't think KhangHy said that.
I ran a Macromedia USB flash drive just fine in Win98FE, but I needed drivers from the Macromedia site. The site said the drivers might not work for Win98FE, but they did.

General Winters, I am happy that you are able to use USB for so many pieces of equiptment on your machine. Guess I should have said "USB" may be better if Win98SE or later OSes are used. Have always been under the impression that this is the case

Jim, guess I should have said in my post where you quoted me: I didn't say..... Don't think KhangHy even alluded to the need for drivers.
The first time I attempted to use my newly acquired, at the time, thumb drive in Win98SE, I had to get the drivers from the web and I remembered that step.
Hope he has since gotten his drive to work to his satisfaction.
