    After installing xp computer won't bootup

    Hi Guys...a friend installed xp over 98se...now the bios does not recognize the hd. When he boots up it only recognizes the cdrw. I have changed the ide cable...no hd....I have looked in bios...seems ok.

    Maxtor hd 20 gigs
    Pentium 3 600 mz
    ATI Rage Fury 32 MG
    SD Ram 128 MB
    CL Soundblaster PCI 512

    When you say the BIOS looks ok, do you mean you see the hard drive listed or not?

    Did you try the hard drive on the other controller on the mobo that is available and may be connected to your cd drive?

    Are both the primary and secondary ide channels enabled in the BIOS?

    Did you change any jumper settings on the hard drive or cd drive?

    When I said the bios seems ok I meant that all the settings seem to be ok...yes I did try another controller ...still no hd recognizion...yes both are enabled in bios and no did not change any jumper settings

    Do have another pc you can put the hard drive in just to see if is is recognized?

    Tried hd in my computer, it was recognized but would not bootup. Tried my hd in his machine and was not recognized.

    As I said it recoginizes the cdrw so I used the ribbin from that for the hd ..now it recoginizes the hd but still won't boot...I get this continueing message
