windows me hangs on mp3s and video downloads

I have a 750 mhz athlon with 256 mb sdram with a cdrw and a dvd-drive 20 gb hd running win ME. Everything runs fine until I try to play an mp3 file which will play for a few minutes then hang with this obnoxious noise coming out of the speakers the only way to halt is to press the reset button..I noticed yesterday that if I was watching streaming video of large file types it would hang on that too...is this something anyone else has heard of??

What do you use to listen/view these files? WMplayer?Realplayer?WinAmp? Are WinAmp or Real Player in your start up folder?

Before we even get into memory issues. WMPlayer is probably the trouble maker. Have you checked out the Media Player updates? or IE 5.5 updates? Have you recently installed and new video or sound cards? or Software?

Let me know what you have tried.

I have wmplayer and winamp that I have tried as well as napsters internal mp3 player...I have nothing in my startup folder the only updates i have done is windows update i did not know there was a specific wmplayer update directly...I have not installed new video or sound cards and the problem was there before I installed any software really...I am considering going back to win98se if I cant get this resolved....I am thinking that maybe it could be my rage2c video card but I have the same video in my other computer that runs fine only difference is on 2nd computer the rage is built into the mother board...there is not a specific ME driver for the rage2c could this be the culprit...I have an s3trio video card that I can put in if it would be better..
