    ADSL Speed Problems

I'm using GTE as both my ISP and ADSL provider. I ordered the 768k both way package, but I only seem to be getting speeds or around 390kbps or 40k/sec. I am about 2 miles from their building.

Is this normal? Or is GTE just really f*cked up? Should I go with another provider like Bell South? This is really pissing the heck out of me. I'm paying $120/month for only 1/2 of the total speed my connection is capable of.

Additionally, I recieved the following line speeds from 3 online services:

    Compuing Central:
    390kbps

    2Wire
    420kbps

    http://bamazed.bconnected.net/
    500kbps

I'd appreciate if anyone could assist me on the matter of whether or not I should go with a different ISP.

DSL gets slower as you get further from their office.

    Have you considered cable?

I pay $40/month (Canadian!) and get (officially) 2.5mbits/sec (~312kbytes/sec) but this varies a little (that's the thing with cable-- unreliable)

I generally get a minimum of 50k and a max of 300 kilobytes per sec, and it's usually around the 150k mark.

Remember, a lot of it depends on the server you are downloading from. Microsoft's servers get me the top speeds, for example [except when they are busy due to release of a new browser version or something]

Computing central clocks me at about 1.5megabits or higher, which is a little faster than T1

You might want to have a look at some of the utilities offered at this page:

    http://tweakfiles.com/modem/

read all directions/info before installing. They are all fairly safe, however.

try to find one that specifically mentions ADSL connections, but the others may help too (as long as they aren't designed for dialup)
