    Help Please !

I deleted some files and accidently deleted one that I apparently need. When I turn my computer on before the screen will bring up any icons I get this message: Cannot find device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registery or System.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try unistalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program. If you still want to use the application associated with this devise file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
What application should i be trying to reinstall? and from where? also at the very bottom it reads: C:\Antvirus\wimmun32.VXD
    Thank you for your help

Thank you for your help, however, I am not very good at this computer stuff. when you say reboot in to dos....how do i get to dos? i see when i shut down it gives me the option to restart in dos, and i tried that but when i get to the dos "screen" it reads, dos: c\<windows> or something like that. where do i actually type the c:\scanreg/restore?

C:\WINDOWS>scanreg /restore. When you see the list of rb00*.cab files come up, pick one dated before your problem occured and hit the "Enter" key. You will be asked to reboot so hit "Enter" again and the machine will boot back to Windows hopefully back to normal again.

    EDIT:
I should add that restoring a backup of your registry will not replace a deleted file. Sounds like you may want to reinstall your anti-virus program and uninstall it using add-remove programs.

I'm with Jim on reinstalling the program that is causing the problem. If you do a scanreg /restore, any program you added to your computer after the date you pick to restore from, will not work because its registry entries will be gone. You would have to reinstall that program.
BTW, did you check to see if there is anything in the Recycle Bin?

EDIT:It sounds like your Antivirus Program is the one that may have to be reinstalled.("C:\Antvirus\wimmun32.VXD")
There is a post by 'ellieT' that asked about recovering deleted files. You might want to take a look.

i am having a terrible time understanding how to get the computer into the "DOS" mode. i believe its as easy as choosing to go into the "dos" mode from the shut down selection. i have tried this. i typed in c:\scanreg / restore and the command is rejected. it never gets far enough to say i have a date to choose from.
thank you to everyone who have been helping me. it is appreciated and my apologies for being a nim wit. ")
