Cause

There is very little information available to analyze this error.

Most likely, the setup routine has improperly installed the system, or a user has reconfigured the system.
If the RAM and hard drive passed the diags above, you might try a repair install of XP. The steps are:
  1. Boot the computer from your Windows XP CD.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen press [Enter] to start the Windows Setup.

  3. Note: Do not choose the "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R" ... because you do not want to use the Recovery Console.

  4. Accept the License Agreement to continue and Windows will start searching for existing Windows installations.

  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and NOW press [R] to start the repair. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

  6. When your computer reboots, if you see a message about pressing any key to boot from CD, do not press any keys. Setup will then continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.


Once that's done, go to Windows Update and install all available updates, including SP3.
