I received this reply from the Klonworks, the folks that wrote the Metro Media Player program:
"Thanks for your questions and for downloading and support Metro Media Player. I hope you enjoy the application as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I did a little research and discovered that all Metro Apps are contained in a secret hidden directory inside Program Files, called Windows Apps. Unfortunately, it is not accessible and you can’t make a shortcut to it and have it work because it needs to run in an app container. However, there is a cool little utility that bridges the gap and may give you exactly what you are looking for:

follow this link to and it will explain what you need to know to make it work. Interesting question, and I hope this helps to answer it."
As stated on the linked page, it works only with MS written Metro programs. Even if it did work with third party apps, one would accomplish nothing because it would create a shortcut icon on the desktop that would be the target and I'm not sure if one would gain any fewer keystrokes or clicks by doing this. All it would really do is open the app from the desktop if one wanted to bypass the new Windows 8 Start screen.
