Hi Fink - yes, I planned to make a current disk image. I'm just about finishing up the updates, etc. It's taken me over 7 hours or so from restore to updating the programs.
I can safely confirm it is not AVG that is the culprit. As per SpywareDr's suggestion of doing some tests in using a Knoppix CD/DVD, it indicated my system was corrupted. In fact, I have use back AVG and updated it to the latest and everything is running ok - touch wood !
Thanks for the reminder about making a current disk image. That's the next thing on my to do list.
