    And your question is???

How much RAM does it have?
How much RAM does it need?
What RAM upgrades can I get?
Where can I get RAM upgrades?

    ???

You could have a Banana2000 and XP still would want 1GB to run passably, 2GB to sing.

    Ram

Darnit, I asked several questions about Ram.
I have the Compaq Presario v5101us xp. laptop

There are 2 modules in computer now. 384 of ram
    I want to install a 1GB PC-2700-SO DIMM
Do I take out both modules?
Do I install the new one in top or bottom slot?
    How many

I am an amateur at this so want to get it right.

Just curious: Computer had 512MB ram when new. What happened to it?

I am retired and use computer for home use.

    How many MB is 1GB?

No rush for answer. Thanks very much. From Nebraska

    What Crucial has to say.
    http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/compa...01US/list.html

512 minus the amount allocated for the video card, leaves the 384.
Which also tells me someone has gone in the BIOS and changed the shared amount of ram for better video.

    1000 MB = 1 GB

And the bottom slot normally is the number 1 slot for ram.

Pull both and replace the bottom stick.
close it and see if the laptop will boot.

You can leave on of the existing modules in, if you want. You'll probably end up with 1152 MB after the graphics memory is taken off.

Yes if it boots with the New stick, then yes you can add one of the old sticks and see if it will boot. If it does, then you will hpefully end up with what SS posted.

But if it does not boot, you have a mismatch in the ram, so remove the old stick.

Train: I looked in Bios and don't see where anyone could change anything unless it is set back to defult. I don't fiddle around in that site. Not my level of experience. Thanks

For Train & SuperSpark: I got a new 1GB module of ram. I removed both old ones and put new one in bottom slot. I then had 896 of Ram. I put one of the old ones back in and then had 1.12GB of Ram. I then took the old one out and put the other old one in and still had 1.12GB of Ram. The old computer works faster and better now. (and I am an expert Ram installer????) Thanks for the help. Things worked like I hoped it would with the old ram.

That is about it for installing ram. Not difficult at all.

And thanks for posting back. Yes, the extra ram does tend to speed things up.
