Service Pack 3 Update
I have a Compaq Presario
AMD Sempron Processor
1.81 GHz, 384mb of RAM
Sofware
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
I just bought a linksys E1000 router and when I put the set up disc in I get a screen that says i have to update my service pack 2 to 3. So I go thru the process twice and there is 1 update that will not take. I was wondering if there is a webstie I can go to for a hotfix? Is there a way to fix this? Or do I need to get an older router to go with my service pack 2?

Which update was it that failed? Details would be helpful. Also, unless you are 100% sure that you have no malware leftovers, it is usually a good idea to scan for malware before installing a Windows Service Pack. Malware can cause trouble. However, it may also be possible to set up your router without using the install CD.

Setup router manually instead.
Cheers.

Like Shinma said log into the router though its web interface and set it up that way. If you open up a command window and run ipconfig/all, the address displayed for default gateway will be the routers ip address. It should be something like 192.168.0.1, so in IE you would type http://192.168.0.1/ into the address bar. I personally never us the setup program, I just log in though the web interface. Once you get your router setup and secured you can figure out why your windows update doesn't stick.
I don't know the same things you don't know.

Did you download the full SP3 installer or not?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
If you plan to use WPA2, there is a patch required for SP2. If you just load SP3, it's already included.

service pack 3 loaded, but still a problem
Got rid of malware and service pack 3 loaded, but now I am getting a black screen and it is asking me if I want windows to load normally? I have said yes several time and it comes back to the same screen. I chose safe mode and the bios works, but if I restart I get the same screen. Windows will not load normally. I booted in safe mode with networking and got my router working but now I have this other issue? Any thoughts??? Thanks

Go to the Command Prompt (All Programs>Accessories) and type "chkntfs x: /D" without the quotes, where X: is the letter of the Windows volume. See if that makes it start normally.
Nick.

Thanks for letting us know. Didn't think people would still be getting bitten with the AMD/SP3 glitch!
