    Dell 4600 long beeps

Friend Dell 4600, CPU 3.G, RAM 1G, hard drive 80G, 30G free space, WinXP Pro SP3, freezes very often but not every time.

It boots completely normal, but have trouble on opening software such as Words, Outlook, FireFox. It has MaCfee Security which sometimes needs to manually verify subscription. The subscription is up to 2011. But the anit-spam filtering contents were reported not updated in last 7 days. The updating of this pack should be done automatically.

On using certain time, I hear a long beep from the motherboard and the computer freezes right away. But the beep does not necessary associate with every freezing.

I check the CPU and power fans, all are spinning. The mcshield.exe always occupies about 20% to 5% of CPU activity.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    First thought is overheating.

CPU fan which is attached to the case with a air flow cover on top of the CPU is spinning. The air is drawing out and I don't feel it is hot, neither the heat sink. Unfortunately, the BIOS does not provide hard ware monitoring.

Thanks Train, I check the back panel, all 4 green lights. The doc does not show the meaning of 1 long beep. It just happens when the system freeze again while I'm opening the FireFox. Hold the on button 4 sec to turn it off and then on again, no beeps. If it's the temp, it shouldn't go away that fast.

    Do not bet on that.

Try monitoring your temps for a bit. These are all excelent freeware utilities. I particularly like Real Temp and HWMonitor. OCCT is superb for stress testing - if the PC can handle that, it can handle anything

    Real Temp

    HWMonitor

    OCCT

    PC Wizard

    Speedfan

Thanks SuperSparks, I downloaded the HWMonitor (no installation) and ran in the computer, it only gives me the HD temp. I ran the same in my laptop, it gave me CPU, GPU and HD temperatures.

Now I notice the long beep happens when the computer freezes and I repeatedly clicks the mouse or press the keyboard many times. If I hold the on/off button to shut down the computer and immediately turn it on again, the computer runs and freezes again after sitting for a while even though no application is manually opened.

I ran hard drive test by SeaTools - all tests passed and temp of HD is about 39C. I have tried to disconnect the CD rewritter, floppy drive, took away the added video card (use the o/b video) - all attempts eventually had frozen computer. I did run Spybot, found about 30 cookies and 1 unwanted program - Generic PUP.Z!cg, I removed it. Ran the McAfee Internet Security, found Fraud.Sysguard, I removed it. Still the computer freezes. The McAfee loaded on booting up, it prompts the computer is not fully protected. 2 buttons: Check Protection Status and Close are display on the message box. I click the Check Status and verify 3 subscriptions: Personal Firewall, Parental Control, Anti-spam; all verified (the subscription expires in 2011). Next booting up, this message pops up again. In some occasions, I also click Close. In both scenarios, the machine froze in a few minutes.

Now, I leave the above message box sitting there and take no action. It runs almost an hour without freezing. I have opened the Task Mgr, Excel, FireFox and jumping among them and also surf on the Internet.

I have run the HJT and will upload the log in the next post. Thanks.

I just installed and run MalwareBytes (quick scan). 5 infected objects: Adware.MyWebSearch, Trojan.Fraudpack, Spyware.OnlineGames, Disabled.SecurityCenter (2 entries) were found. I removed them and restarted computer. Up to now, I do not see the "Verify Subscription" message pops up. I'm doing the MalwareBytes Full scan now and will post the result later. Thanks.

I want to correct the information that the "Computer is not fully protected" notice pops again (computer restart at 3:14pm and it pops up at 3:30 pm). It just pops up a little bit later than before. The MalwareBytes full scanning is still running.

The MWB runs for 35 min, scanns 91764 objects, no infected obj., but hangs there. Please help.

I finally ran the MalwareByte full scan successfully. It finishes in 1hr 36 min w/o freezing and the computer is clean. However, when I save the log, I thought that I saved it into my jump drive. Later I couldn't find it. So I used the Search to find a *.txt modified today in the C drive.

What I get is some funny results, it search my jump drive as well and display the log file created by the quick scan repeatedly until I click Stop. If I specify search on the jump drive only, it won't search the C drive and won't repeat the results.

Actually, the Search does not stop until I manually click the STOP button.

    Look in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
